Toshiba says 51GB HD DVD still under development
Toshiba disputes reports that disc with room for 7 hours of hi-def video has been submitted to DVD Forum for approval

A three-layer HD DVD disc with enough room for about 7 hours of high-definition video is still under development and hasn't been submitted for approval to the DVD Forum, the standard's governing body, despite reports to the contrary, Toshiba said Thursday.

The disc, which has a capacity of 51GB, was first unveiled at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas in January this year. It attracted much attention not just because it substantially raises the maximum capacity of an HD DVD disc but also because it beats that of the rival Blu-ray Disc format, albeit by just 1GB.

In the last few days a number of Web sites and blogs have reported the format has been submitted for approval to the DVD Forum and some have said that approval has been received, but Toshiba says nothing of the sort has happened.

"We're puzzled ourself by where these reports came from," said Junko Furuta, a spokeswoman for the company in Tokyo. She said Toshiba hasn't made any further announcements about the disc since CES, and it wasn't submitted to any steering committees during this week's DVD Forum meetings in Tokyo.

When Toshiba first announced the disc in January, it said it hoped to get approval for the disc some time in 2007.

HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc are competing to become the de facto replacement for DVD for storing high-definition movies and other content. HD DVD is primarily backed by Toshiba, while Sony is the main backer of Blu-ray Disc. HD DVD can hold 15GB on a single disc, or 30GB on a dual layer disc, while Blu-ray Disc manages 25GB or 50GB on single or dual-layer discs, respectively.

To fit 51GB on its prototype disc Toshiba added a third recording layer and increased the maximum storage capacity of each layer to 17GB.

Who eats crow when asked if this validates BDA claim that even with advanced codecs 30gb really was not enough?

This is crap anyway for various reasons. Are these 3layer discs really targeted to the home video market? What are the chances that current generation players would be able to play them? If its a prick waving contest I believe four layer up to 200gb BD has been done in the lab?

They'll come up with new spin. I think this is all mostly about providing hope and leading people to think HD DVD will have the needed capabilities.

But I'm of the mind that it's whether features get used that is important, not whether they exist. With Warner (and possibily Paramount) going to Total HD, and none of the HD DVD studios even wanting TL51 (so is the long standing claim), even if it is accomplished (still in development) and approved (needs to be accepted by a bunch of drive makers who will have to redesign their drives), there is no indication it will ever get used.

It's sarcasm and the fact that some on the HD DVD side spin every new format-crushing blow as being good news.

Yeah it's a joke at the expense of those over at AVS who continually spun everything as an HD-DVD coup

the people pumping HD-DVD sound like people who patroll the stock MB's and pump or hate endlessly...

I just bought a PS3 with a Sony 32" LCD (KDL-32S2010)....

nice room set-up....still haven't played anything on the bigger TV in the Living-room...

I don't even hear anyone talking about HD-DVD anymore....the PS3's are starting to sell in my area...

This triple layer disc will never see the market - As if the HD-DVD group are going to drop this bombshell on every existing HD-DVD player and 360 add on owner!
