Default Sony STRDG720 question

Does the STRDG720 pass audio through the HDMI cable while it is in standby? I usually play my PS3 games without surround sound.

Also, is $250 a good deal for this receiver? I have heard quality wise the Yamaha HD audio receivers are much better but they start (here in Canada) for at least twice as much.

Thanks.

EDIT: My BD player is my PS3.

Just get the 820 for $40 more. I believe they ship to Canada:

As for your question, I'm not sure, but I assume it will pass through regular audio if its not on...

No, the reciever needs to be on to pass through HDMI signals. I think the same goes with any receiver. $250 seems like a pretty good deal. You shouldn't have any quality issues with it.

$250 isn't bad at all if that's Canadian money. the STR-DG720 is on sale for $225 USD at Fry's this weekend. Personally, I would skip Sony receivers unless I couldn't afford better or got a heckuva deal. Sonically, they aren't there. Consider Onkyo, Yamaha, Denon, Marantz, Harman Kardon and Pioneer instead.

as a reciever you will find it to be a good receiver. not the best.
you will need to have it turned on to get audio and video.

Gosh people, for $250, who is going to think it's going to be "the best?" As previously said, for an Onkyo at that price, you will only get sound through HDMI on the TV.... I think processed 7.1 sound, will be much better. Speakers will make much more difference than the brand of receiver. Your Sony will also handle 1080/24p, it will handle all of the Blu Ray audio codecs, and you don't have to ASSIGN inputs to get the dang thing to work. It will work right out of the box. It also won't randomly shut down and need resetting from not having something between the top of the unit and the stratosphere.

Well I have had two Onkyos, one being fairly bottom of the range (I sold it two days after I got it, and got the 720 as the Onkyo didn't process HDMI audio), one being absolute top of the range (PR-SC885P). I have a Sony STR-DG720, STR-DG920 (I did have an 820, but sent it back and got the 920) and HT-SS2000.... am I qualified to make a response?
