I currently use the Q9550 Intel Quad Core 2.83GHz chip with 4GB DDR2 ram.
I oc the FSB to 1600 and it runs beautifully.
I can't throw anything at it to make it slow down.
It's paired with an Asus mobo with on board RAID, HDMI 1080p60, DVI 1080p60 and 8-channel 24-bit audio.

The mobo was $139, the processor was $329.
To move up to the Q9650 QC 3.00GHz chip was an extra $200, not worth it in my opinion. The Q9550 is equalling and often besting the last generation of extreme chips.

Asus PQ5-EM - $134 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813131336
Q9550 - $319 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115041

I can hook up two monitors (1 @ 1920x1200 HDMI, 1 @ 1680x1050 DVI) and play a Blu-ray Disc on one while watching an Apple 1080p trailer on the other. Trememdous processing power.
