Hi im a new guy. No stranger to home theater and that.
Got my new Sony S350 today and am very disappointed with the quality. First off TV: Samsung HPT 4264(720p/1080i) and again player is new sony s350 via HDMI. I got Iron man and the new Indiana Jones movie to start off the new blu ray collection. I already have iron man on reg dvd. Thing is the movies look like i am watching a reg dvd on my old non up converting dvd player. I have tried both 720p and 1080i settings and there is no difference. I decided to put my reg dvd iron man in and there is no difference in picture quality. Sad thing is my satellite HD looks 10x better then blu ray. I know picture is suppose to be amazing. Heck even my friend has exact same tv i have and he has a ps3 and i remember watching Planet earth on it and it looked so real. Am i missing something here or am i just expecting a big difference from standard dvd to blu ray. I really thought there be a difference like going from standered satellite channels to hd sat channels. |

Maybe you have some settings not set correctly? Have you calibrated your TV? If you DID think Blu-ray looked amazing, then you probably just need to mess around with some settings. |

P.S., your TV doesn't do 1080 anything so changing between 720p and 1080i should make little to no difference. |

only thing i can think of is make sure the hdmi is outputting the full res your tv can handle. i am not sure why it would look that way even my 480i set looks better with blu

Well I remember when I first got a blu-ray player a year and a half ago, I set it up through a standard connection by mistake and didn't know why I couldn't see HD. So I would double check your connection first, then your player settings.

It is set up correctly. And it is not tv.
Again my satellite HD channels look at lest 10x better. I even swapped hdmi inputs and same thing. Tv was set with an ISF dvd i have 2 settings one for day and one for night. As far as the settings i dont remember what they are set at i think for night time black level is at 56 white level around 69-70 sharp 20 (100) and as far as color temp set to warm, from what i read on this set warm is as close to 4500°k warm 2 starts to add a red tint to whites cool 1 is nice but cool 2 starts to add a little blue. All noise filters and that stuff is off. DNIE is off. Now Tv is set to just scan. Even if i put it to 16:9 the only difference is 16:9 shaves about 1/4" off the sides of the picture. I just dont see how compressed(10-15Mpbs) Sat feed has a lot better picture then a blu ray that maxes out at 50. If i watch the meter it high 20's to low 30s while watching IJ4. I will try to get pictures of a movie vs sat feed hd up in a few hours |

Well, the tv only has a native panel resolution of 1024 x 768, which is even lower than 720p (1280x720). In this case it could really be the low resolution of the display that's the problem.

It's either...
1. Your HDTV Settings are whack (remember your not Full HD 1080P, which those movies are encoded for, so they're downgrading) 2. You may have a P.O.S. HDMI cable (not 1080p rated, or just crap) - yes, 10 dollar HDMI cables will suck! People can tell me what they want, but I worked at an electronic retailer for 3 years. MOST HDMI cables will be the same however. 3. Check your Player's output setting 4. Blaumann's solution "Well, the tv only has a native panel resolution of 1024 x 768, which is even lower than 720p (1280x720). In this case it could really be the low resolution of the display that's the problem." #4 Seems like the most obvious solution to me, it's not even true 720p 5. Remember, Your friend's setup is different compared to yours... the PS3 is one of the best Blu Players out there under 1000 bucks. Last edited by ObiTrentKenobi; 11-29-2008 at 12:44 PM. |

yeah, it's that your TV has a really low resolution (1024 x 768), it can barely show more than a dvd unfortunately (720x480). blu-ray native resolution is 1920x1080 and it is a huge difference from that...iron man and IJ don't look the same at all, and i've seen them on both formats. just for reference check out this pic and compare the pixel/spacial information between 1024 x 768 (XGA) and 1920 x 1080 (HD 1080) to see what you're missing out on.
