Default Deciding between two systems

I just purchased the Yamaha 590BL Home Theater system: it only has 600Watts does watts matter? I want bigger sound, subs, etc.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1202648988902

I got this product for $419 dollars yesterday, which is 100 off price today. This is for my 42" flat screen hdtv. I have not opened it yet and put it together to see what kind of deals were on other systems. Are these systems any better than the one I just purchased? I am trying to stay around $499.

Sony Home theater 1000watts: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1140391860900

which should I choose from?

I am hooking up a ps3 as well through HDMI.

not sure about the various models, but "Wattage" generally doesn't mean anything in practical terms..... if you want "louder" you need larger speakers.

Beta is absolutly right here, Did you buy the HTiB because it was all inclusive or because of a budget? If it were due to a budget, whats your budget, there are prolly options out there we could tell you about that would give you louder/bigger sound.

In terms of the subwoofer, if there are more watts, does that equal louder base or just size of subwoofer?

Its a combination of both. however, smaller subs produce tighter bass where as a larger sub produces more boominess.

As far as other speakers, larger is better. I went from a Sony speaker setup to a Polk bookshelf setup and it was night and day. Better range which in turn makes it sound louder.

Actually, that isn't always true for either. Some small subs are terrible with accuracy compared to larger subs and vice versa. Same with larger speakers. Fisher Studios, Cerwin Vega, and Technics are a few brands that made very large speakers that aren't very good at all. Some of the better speakers are small ones.

Sorry, you are correct. My response could be very misleading. I should have said that "generally" or "usually" and that "there are always exceptions either way."

I appreciate you putting me in my place.

At least I know who's getting coal for "the Holidays". It's alright, just clarifying things.
