Default Tweak TV vs. DVE

Weeks ago, I calibrated my television with settings from tweaktv.com.

Today, I decided to re-calibrate using the DVE disc (complete with color filters, etc). Several hours later, I must admit that I liked the picture I had before, the settings from tweaktv.com.

And so my question is this: did this happen to anyone else? Is anyone completely unsatisfied with the results of their DVE disc?

Oh, and for the record, I don't have $400 lying around for a professional calibrator.

But is it overall better? Can you tell a difference?

Did you find the DVE disc confusing?

well, the THX mode, is like movie or cinema but its apparently supposed to be the best setting to watch it in, and usually people will tell you to do your customization in a cinematic mode. the setting from tweak is, lets say different, its brighter and such but that doesnt mean its better. i still think the THX setting mode is better, but i keep the custom mode from tweak for regular tv watching, and gaming. and yes, i found the DVE disk very confusing lol, ive watched it several times as well....

Your post did remind me of one thing though. Even though I prefer the tweaktv.com settings, I must admit the DVE disc did help me calibrate better black levels (brightness). I may keep those settings.

Many folks think a brighter picture is "better", but most of the times that kind of picture is nowhere close to accurate. If you set things based on DVE, then your set will now be as close to accurate as you can get without a professional ISF calibration. Most folks will tell you to simply watch your set for awhile. You'll get used to the new settings, and realize they look much more realistic versus the brighter/harsher settings.

This is interesting, because I've been thinking of buying the DVE blu. I guess some people have found it confusing? I did use the settings from tweak for my tv a few months back, and it was a major improvement from it's original settings, so I was very happy with that. Do you guys think it's worth buying the DVE?

If you have netflix, you can rent it.

Otherwise, I suppose it's still worth the $15 bucks on amazon.

Posted settings are a place to start, but each set is a little different, and your viewing environment (ambient light, wall color, etc.) will also affect the settings.

if you rent dve from netflix, it doesn't come with the color filters. if you have blue only mode on your tv though, you can still work with it.

I found the DVE bluray to be quite confusing. Basically, they don't explain enough about the picture you are trying to get to. Like the blue, red and green filters...I tried and tried to get all these the same, but when I would change 1 setting, it would drastically change the other. I could never get them all to be right at the same time. What I did in the end was calibrate to the DVE disc, then I went to tweaktv and calibrated a little more. The DVE disk is not very user friendly. If you don't know a whole lot about calibrating a tv like me, I would not recommend it. That being said, my picture is way better than it was before. And I'm saving some wattage as well.

this is because your TV is not decoding the color's properly. If your TV decoded correct, all the colors would work.

Because all three primary colors do not match perfect, your best options are...

A. adjust blue to match perfect. Live with red and/or green being slightly off.

B. professional calibration, which would get these colors as close to perfect as you will ever get with your tv. Some TV's are just bad with colors.

This will get you the best results in my opinion:

1st use DVE to adjust your brightness/contrast settings.
Then use AVC-HD to adjust color/tint settings
Just put sharpness to "0" (or if you must, put it higher to your preference)

I find that the AVC-HD color/tint pattern is much easier to use than the DVE test pattern. Note that the AVC-HD disc can only be played in blu-ray players and you still need the blue-filter which comes with the DVE disc. I find that the brightness and contrast test patterns are much easier to use on DVE.

I've tried this combo on multiple TVs with blu-ray players and I get good results.
