Default PlayStation 3 Settings Tweak Noticeably Improves Visual Quality

Quote:
It's been a year since the PS3 was released, but TechBugTV and gametrailers.com have just figured out that you can tweak two settings to make the visual look not "washed out"&m—the main complaint people have when comparing PlayStation 3 graphics to Xbox 360 graphics on the same game. All you have to do is go to your RGB settings and change "Limited" to "Full", then flip the "super-white" setting to "On" on TVs that support it. Even though YouTube's vid quality looks somewhere between horrible and insanely horrible, you can still tell the difference in colors. [TechBugTV]

Stupid question, but does this affect video playback also using HDMI?

That's how I have mine set up and I have never seen a washed out image on any game or Blu. My 360 looks more washed out when I download a demo on both formats.

Changing RGB setting from Limited to Full changes black-to-white video levels (16-235) to black-to-white computer levels (0-255). Depends on what your displays wants, and if you calibrate for one or the other. If you calibrate your display with a test disc for Limited, Full will look off and wrong. If you calibrate for Full, Limited will look off and wrong:

If you calibrate for Limited and chose Full the image will be high contrast and too punchy.
If you calibrate for Full and chose Limited the image will be low contrast and kinda dull.

Hmm.....I have an HDMI cable running from my PS3 to my Onkyo 805, and a cable running to my Sony 50" SXRD. If I did as the original poster said, would this affect the picture quality, since I am running HDMI through my 805?

yes, changing any of those settings will alter the picture...you would then have to calibrate the HDTV for that setting as Deciazulado pointed out in his post.

It's important to note that the RGB setting over HDMI causes banding on some HDTVs during Blu-ray playback due to bad signal processing in some HDTV units. All PS3 users should at least experiment with the Y Cb/Pb Cr/Pr setting to see if it produces superior picture quality for them, as a number of units are known to handle this signal better than RGB.

Note that both the RGB Full setting only affects your output when you select RGB over HDMI, and that Super White On only affects your output when using Y Cb/Pb Cr/Pr.

Recommending that users use both is misleading and unhelpful.
