Why a 720P TV is able to display 1080i?

Is it only able to accept a 1080i signal and then down convert it? On my 720 Philips it would say 1080i on the TV but the tv only went to 720p.

It accepts 1080i and then displays it in 720p - basically, downconverts

This is because some networks broadcast in 1080i...they have to be able to accept that signal and still display it otherwise they'd have some ticked off consumers on their hands

The 1080i you're seeing (according to info banner) is what is being fed to your set. Test it on your stb. Try 1080i, 720p, 480p, 480i., and see what your info banner says.
