Default Help me understand Contrast

Just got a New HDTV and the PQ is amazing but i have a question about contrast....My question is where does contrast play a big role in when watching a movie? Example is contrast a difference maker when watching dark scenes and the portions of the tv that are dark basically look like the TV is turned off in that section(Due to high Contrast Ratio)? or does contrast help out in brighter scenes where the ratio between white and black is larger given the image more of a 3d affect?...Sorry about the wording having trouble trying to convery what im trying to get at but Does contrast help more in dark scenes or brighter scenes?
