Perhaps I am not looking in the right places. I am relatively new to HT and after purchasing my HDTV, I wanted a good sound system to go along with it. I had inherited an RCA receiver, 5.1 ch, 300 watts from a family member and it died out on me. I purchased its apparent successor at 1,000 watts. It seems weaker than the older model. It was $140 at Wal-Mart.
This is a newbie question.. alright? Why are there no receivers anywhere in Wal-Mart or Fred Meyer? All I see are DVD HT set-ups that really are only made for DVD's and not for DVD/VCR/AUX/CD/etc. This RCA receiver is horrible but it's much better than listening to the speakers on the TV. What I need is a good quality receiver that'll accomodate Blu-ray audio (7.1)? The speakers and subwoofer seem decent on this set-up, it's the lack of power in the receiver that sucks. http://www.amazon.com/RCA-5-1-Channe.../dp/B000P6J79E Any tips? Also... WIRES. They're everywhere! |

While I love Wal-Mart (yes, it's true!) they're not a good place to shop for "quality" electronics. They fulfill the "bargain" requirement that many of us have with our day-to-day shopping.
You have to at least step up to Circuit City, Best Buy, online or local hi-fi shops. ![]() ![]() |

I would have to agree with the others on the thread. Wal-mart is certainly not the best to shop when looking for higher end products. You best bet is to pick up your Sunday paper and check all the major stores (ex. circut city's, best buys, local electronic tv/audio stores) and watch for their sales especially if your not looking to spend a lot. You can get a leftover model receiver that's pretty nice for dirt.

Thanks for all the replies, guys. I'll check out all the links referenced here - I figured Wal-Mart would have something decent since I recently purchased a plasma HDTV and it's worked very well for me so far. The best method for me is to probably stick to this forum and learn a bit more about the HT trade. My system doesn't have to be the best, since I am currently living in an apartment.

Sidebar, but you know I didn't even KNOW about brands like Hollister and A&F until I came to UM? I had never even HEARD of Lacoste!
Well, back then, considering the neighborhood I grew up and the schools I attended, I wore...ahem..."urban" clothing. lol. Not anymore, but back in High school. |

Hollister and A&F, they don't even make clothes that would fit me. I was a Defensive lineman/Linebacker. Those clothes are for skinny little wanna be dirt bike riders.

I had started out with the RCA RT2380 HTib for $99 bucks from a computer store. It really did sound pretty good and I thought I was happy.
It was for the bedroom and I know I didn't want alot of power because, I am living in an apartment. I then wanted something with more power for the living room area and I bought another HTiB.... Panasonic..... Which I am using in the bedroom now and will upgrade to the Onkyo 606 and Polk Rm6750. I found this website blu-ray.com and learn a few things and bought the audio set-up in my sig below. I kinda wish I learned a little more before I bought everything. To the OP, if I knew what I know now and wanted what you are asking for your best bet would be: Onkyo 606 $250 Polk Rm6750 $200 When I first heard the HD Sound compared to the HTiB, I felt like I struck gold |
