Default PS3 Slim - Easter 2009?

Roaming the streets of Glasgow (not the wisest thing to do) the other day, I came across a nice, friendly man from Sony’s PR lot in the middle of an anonymous multimedia store. In the midst of discussing Home, upcoming games and how long it was taking for the store’s PS3 to download Life With PlayStation (although we didn’t discuss why it would need the software, since it would be used in the store for gaming), he pipped up a little bit of information about Sony’s plans for the PS3 next year.

It seemed a little odd, but I figured it could be cool enough news to forward to all of you. Hit the jump for what he said!

According to this mysterious, mystical source - I’m trying to hype this up as much as I can - Sony have already started work on a slimline PS3. I know, I know: it’s perhaps just a little bit too early to start talking about such things. The Sony PR man assured me that this came from inside the company and that he was sure of what he was saying. Here’s the ‘facts’:

* The parts are already designed and ready to be manufactured
* The console could be out as early as Easter 2009
* It will retail for £200/$300

Chatting to Rothbart about this, he’d heard rumours of a price cut in spring 2009 and so these two rumours might just coincide with each other; maybe they’re the same thing. The fact that this rumour came from inside Sony is what’s got me pondering.

Still, you can’t escape the fact that it might just be too early for a slimline PS3. Sony only announced and released the slimmed-down PS2 4 years after the console originally launched. To have a console shrunken down, ready for production and prepared for release just 2 and a half years after the original launch (2 years if you live in SCEE territory) sounds a little premature.

All we know is, it’s a roomah. Sony might be making a slimline PS3 now, or they might not. I’ve sent an email off to Sony just in case. The least we can hope for is a ‘no comment’.

UPDATE: Since writing this article, I have indeed received a stern ‘no comment’ from SCEE. ‘We don’t comment on rumour or speculation’ was the exact wording, but I can’t see a denial in there
anywhere. I think there could be s0me meat to this rumour: watch this space…

Link?

Anyways the PS3 is so massively huge that it could have 2 slim lines in its lifetime, and the PSP already had 2 significant alterations.....though I'm not really trusting this source.

Well, if this happens I hope the slimdowned version will be able to bitstream all new HD audio codecs through HDMI allowing receivers to do the decodeing.

They would have to give me something new other then it just being slimmer for me to get another one like usb ports in the back of the system or something cause I actually like the size of it now dont see a need for a slimmer one maybe for cars I guess

I usually don't post a link because, i'll post the link, then get told, I need to paste the whole story because people can't read it at work, so I just post it up and let the speculation begin.

Won't happen easter 2009.

Only reason I'm commenting is that I wanted to laugh at how the author takes the 'We don’t comment on rumour or speculation' line that Sony (and most every company) always uses as "there could be s0me meat to this rumour"

I also wanted to say that I hate all these damn skus. wtf!!! Multiple versions of the same console isn't really uncommon I guess, but it's happening far too often now. Thinking back over the past 18 months or so I think the following consoles have all been available for purchase in the US

1. Xbox 360 Core
2. Xbox 360 Arcade
3. Xbox 360 Pro 20GB
4. Xbox 360 Premium 60GB
5. Halo 3 Xbox 360
6. Xbox 360 Elite

7. PS3 80GB (Motorstorm)
8. PS3 40GB
9. Metal Gear Solid PS3
10. PS3 80GB
11. PS3 160GB

12. Wii

18 months, 3 consoles, 12 skus in just the US alone. If you throw in other territories and the couple US PS3 Skus that disappeared over 18 months ago you can easily see it's gone well beyond ridiculous. Oh. I almost forgot that there are certain 360 Skus that have both HDMI and non-HDMI models so the number might be a bit higher (I don't know when that happened though).

I don't see the point in adding the bundle's because you would then have to add the 40 with Spider-man 3...and when the 60 came with Casino Royale or Talladega Nights....

so there should be one less 80 than there is listed.

20gb PS3
40gb PS3
60gb PS3
80gb b.c. PS3
80gb PS3

I left them out on purpose actually. I was only looking at the last 18 months and the 20GB was phased out in April 2007 and the 60GB began phasing out in July 2007.

I suppose the 60GB still fits within the 18 month window though. I just couldn't remember exactly when it was phased out when writing my first post (i just checked wiki to make this post)

That sounds about right to me. I'm sure they'll drop the price in 2009, but doubt we'll see any real changes to the SKUs other than different game bundles and possibly the 160GB disappearing next year

this is the part i have trouble with:

* The parts are already designed and ready to be manufactured
* The console could be out as early as Easter 2009

i believe a slim PS3 could very well be in the works, but if it isn't already rolling out off the lines i doubt it'll be on shelves by easter.
