Toshiba Samsung completes Blu-ray Drive | Print | E-mail

from : http://www.emedialive.com/Articles/R...rticleID=10987

TSST Korea (Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology Corporation) announced that it has completed the technical development of its Blu-ray disc drives. These offer a storage capacity up to 25GB at a single layer disc.

In the Blu-ray drive, the blue laser is the core factor that enables the next-generation optical disc format. Current DVDs use a red laser (650nm) to read and write data, while Blu-ray and HD DVD use a shorter-wavelength blue laser (405nm). As a result, the Blu-ray beam can focus more precisely, enabling it to read information recorded in pits that are only 0.16 microns long, which is more than twice as small as the pits on a DVD. Also, the smaller pit length allows for the storing of up to 25GB in a single layer disc -- about five times more than can be stored on a standard DVD disc.

The enhanced design that was first incorporated into Samsung's External DVD Writer is being adapted to the Blu-ray Drive as well. Samsung's Blu-ray Drive has the sophisticated black and silver color design of a high-end A/V product that would look perfect even in a living room. Blu-ray offers 50GB of storage capacity on a double-layer disc (25GB on a single-layer disc). A single-layer Blu-ray disc can hold 25GB, which can be used to record over 2 hours of HDTV or more than 13 hours of standard-definition TV. There are also dual-layer versions of the discs that can hold 50GB.

Like all the other Samsung ODD Drives, the Blu-ray drive is eco-friendly and supports Firmware Live Updates that allow users to ensure they always have the latest Blu-ray firmware version. Samsung Electronics is a member of the Blu-ray Association and will launch internal and external Blu-ray drives simultaneously in 2006 under the Samsung brand through the Samsung Electronics distribution channel.

Default lets see the before statements from TOSHIBA

Toshiba Releases Official Comment on Reports on Paramount

3 October, 2005

Our understanding is that Paramount Home Entertainment also continues to support HD DVD, a position established in comments from Paramount officials in press reports. We see Paramount's continued commitment to releasing HD DVD titles as proof that the studio still recognizes HD DVD's advantages: accelerated time to market, greater proven capacity, lower expected price, and enhanced consumer features. We look forward to continuing to collaborate with the studio in this important product area.

We understand that studios want to see precisely what will happen in the CE and IT industries, and that they will want to support all potential markets for their products.

However, once HD DVD comes to market at the end of 2005 in Japan, and early next year in the United States as planned, it will not take long to know which format really delivers the benefits of high definition to the consumer.

In terms of development, HD DVD is far in advance of Blu-ray. Volume production of discs will see decisive cost and productivity advantages in favor of HD DVD. On the strength of these facts, we are convinced that Hollywood studios and other content holders will eventually opt for commercialization in the HD DVD format.

The HD DVD format is the only next-generation DVD format defined by the DVD Forum, the international organization that determines DVD specifications. The Forum has approximately 240 member companies around the world, including major Hollywood studios and leaders in the CE and IT industries. The HD DVD format was arrived at only after extensive, open discussions and technical evaluations among the membership. Moreover, development of HD DVD is in the final phase, and we are proceeding with necessary preparations for commercialization.

HD DVD features compatibility with current DVD, and to this adds advanced characteristics, including efficient manufacturing of discs and hardware, cost efficiency, superior connectivity with PCs through iHD software. As HDTV and large-sized flat panel TVs continue their market penetration, HD DVD alone offers the ability to meet rapidly increasing consumer demand for high definition DVD content in a timely manner. Last but not least, HD DVD will adopt AACS, created by major IT and CE companies, and so realize Hollywood’s most pressing concern: robust content protection – a great benefit to content holders.

then this one:

Toshiba's statement on reports related to Warner Bros.'s announcement on next-generation optical discs

21 October, 2005

Tokyo -- Toshiba and Warner Bros. continue to collaborate closely toward the commercial launch of HD DVD. We understand Warner Bros. continues to strongly support HD DVD, due to its outstanding features, cost structures, and market readiness.

We recognize Warner Bros.'s participation in the Blu-ray Disc Association represents the studio's understandable commitment to listen to broad array of opinions and to continue to make technical evaluations of each format, and we are more than confident this will not affect timely introduction of HD DVD content to the market.

The fact that new voices from within the Blu-ray camp have recently called for adoption of key features already in HD DVD — iHD for its superb PC interoperability and Mandatory Managed Copy to allow for secure DVD ripping — shows the level of technical balance achieved by the HD DVD format.

HD DVD offers already-verified volume disc production and substantial superiority in terms of recordable disc cost. It also integrates a series of advanced technologies, including AACS for robust content protection system, and VC-1, a highly efficient video compression technology, for enhanced storage capacity.

Toshiba strongly believes the HD DVD format will eventually win broad support as the more superior format, and in cooperation with our partners, we are committed to bringing HD DVD products first to market early next year in the U.S..

then this:

Toshiba and Samsung Electronics to Integrate Optical Disk Device Businesses

22 September, 2003

Toshiba Corporation
Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.

Tokyo and Seoul -- Toshiba Corporation and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. today signed a memorandum of terms covering integration of their respective optical-disk-drive businesses in a joint venture. The two companies will now finalize details of the agreement in readiness for incorporation of the joint venture.

The new joint venture will bring together product and business planning, product development, procurement and sales for optical-disk drives (ODD), including CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives. The new company will be 51% owned by Toshiba and 49% owned by Samsung Electronics and consolidated by Toshiba. The JV will be headquartered in Japan, while its wholly owned subsidiary established in Korea will control operations there.

The scale of the combined operation will position the joint venture among the world leaders in the ODD business. With 2002 annual sales exceeding 200-billion yen, the collaboration is expected to further enhance its global position.

The optical-disk-drive business faces fast changing customer requirements for faster, slimmer drives, and a rapid transition in the main product to recordable DVD drives. Price erosion and alliances are also making themselves felt and further intensifying competition. In this environment, advantages in technology, product development and price competitiveness are all crucial for survival.

The new joint venture will construct a competitive business structure that can promote optimized use of management resources and leadership in the global market.

I'm not sure it really adds up to anything super signifigant.

Outside of HD-DVD vs. BD, all of these companies have joint ventures with each other on all kinds of things, including even Sony and Toshiba themselves, if I'm not mistaken.

You'll especially see the likes of that in the PC market.

TOSHIBA owns 100% controling share of the PRODUCTION COMPANY WHERE THAT NEW Samsung combo drive is "comeing out of" they own it 100% look at TOSHIBA'S stance on HD-DVD 2005..when the HD-DVD drive was to come with the "XBOX360" from the get go..what happened...its now 2007..what drives are comeing out of their KOREA production fab plant...blu-ray optical drives...HD-DVD zealots are getting played..because they just sold double players.....if HD-DVD was so strong WHY PRODUCE a BLU-RAY DRIVE AT ALL..because SAMSUNG is on the blu-ray board of directors...thus HD-DVD cannot win..because the only OTHER production company besides TOSHIBA that would have produced HD-DVD optical drives...would have been NEC..an if you don't know

NEC..merged its optical drive company with SONY...guess who controls the majority of SHARES..55% ...SONY...
on top of this NEC...

is the "CO-VICE CHAIR OF THE HD-DVD promotional group"

http://www.hddvdprg.com/eng/about/member.html

there is no format war..its all a myth..blu-ray had already WON when NEC did that ..apr 2006 was the death of HD-DVD.

yup its simple..when the xbox360 was going to be produced..an HD-DVD drive was the optical drive that was talked about going into the xbox360..an since the HD-DVD drive would have delayed the xbox360 ..Microsoft decided to go ahead an produce the XBOX360 without the drive....was TOSHIBA excited about that...?

which would have been better for TOSHIBA...EXTERNAL OR AN INTERNAL OPTICAL DRIVE FOR A HD-DVD.....WHICH WOULD SELL MORE ..IF THE OPTICAL DRIVE PRE INSTALLED...OR EXTERNAL...

NOW MICROSOFT "SAYS DIGITAL DOWNLOADS ARE THE NEXT FORMAT" AN BLU-RAY OR HD-DVD will not last..so that means by going by that statement..what happens with the next ver. of the xbox ..DOES IT not HAVE NOT OPTICAL DRIVE...OR DOES MICROSOFT STICK WITH DVD....DO MICROSOFT MAKE A DVD drive on their next system after the xbox360. an external DVD optical drive for backward compatability with the xbox360 for the next xbox an sell it as optional...you know how microsoft loves giveing the consumer a choice..!
