Question Not enough memory?

I was on the Internet on my PS3 last night and got an odd message while on FoxNews.com.

Quote:
There was not enough memory. Window content was replaced with blank page
Why does the PS3 not have the memory to display Foxnews.com? There were no downloads or other windows open.

Maybe the Flash content was too big. Could be a number of things.

Maybe you had too many windows open at the same time. That has happened to me. For a computer to have a lot of windows open, you need a good deal of memory available (or risk tapping into the page files). The PS3 is meant to tear through mountains of data quickly...not have it just sit there taking up space. That's what happens if you have additional windows open.

Or the PS3 simply doesn't have tall enough boots to wade through all the bullshit on Fox News...

unless your using Linux, don't worry about the PS3 not working like a computer. I had the same problem because I would have a lot of windows open. Now that I use Linux it's good to go.

A good way to see if that's the case is to try CNN.com. That should totally hang the console if this is the issue.

If the PS3 cached to the HDD there wouldn't be an issue.

There was only 1 window open. And Fox is by far better than CNN. I hate Ted Turner.

Political aspects aside. The PS3 browser sucks for loading any big flash/media contect pages. Same thing on happens on the PSP allthe time.

True. Good thing they give you the option of loading Linux on your PS3 to permanently solve this problem.

I would put Linux on it, but i don't have the installation disc. I did try to put OS X on it, but of course that was unsuccessful.

Just download in from www.linux.org and make your own installation (ISO) discs.

How hard is it? I downloaded Ubuntu for my PC, but never could get it to work. What distribution should I use for the PS3?

Visit this site for all of your PS3 Linux needs:
http://ps3wiki.qj.net/

btw, the "out of memory" error message is a bug in the PS3 web browser. A simple reboot fixes the issue.

I got the "out of memory" error message too a few days ago. I didn't quite understand it. I logged out then logged back in and everything was fine after. Wierd.

Not out of the box so to speak. It has to be optimized for PPC core and setup to work with the otheros.bld file from Sony.

If you have programming skills than it's another story of course.
