Default Kino's North Shore Blu Ray is missing a scene!

I can't find any discussion about this new disc, and this was really bothering me since watching it, so I tried to take some caps to spark a discussion. I have seen North Shore since 80s TV, VHS, and DVD copies. On the new Kino disc, I realized the movie was missing an entire, short scene. These are the Universal DVD caps of the missing scene:

They are between the 101 and 102 minute marks. This scene is in every showing of North Shore I have ever seen from TV to DVD, I never saw the film in the theater so I can't comment on that version. I can't take Blu Ray caps, but this scene is not in the movie. On the Kino disc Rick just paddles off and catches the wave and there is not even audio between Vince and Chandler. I compared the total runtime of the DVD vs. Blu, but the Blu is actually 20 seconds longer, probably cause of the Kino crawl at the beginning, so no evidence there.

Anyone else out there love this movie and own the new disc? I emailed Kino about this, but don't even know if they will get it to someone relevant to find out more about this anomaly. My only guess is this scene was never in the actual film, and every version before the Blu Ray was some kind of home video/TV cut? Would seem strange, but possible. Kino doesn't say if they did a new scan or not, if this is the same Universal master as the DVD, it seems odd the scene isn't there.

If you've heard of or seen the movie Rad, this is Rad with surfing, just as good if you ask me.

I had the DVD of this since it came out, and was impressed back then with the jump over the VHS I had. The Blu Ray doesn't destroy the DVD, this is a dirty/grainy movie at times and clean looking other times (think Predator, the old Fox BD), and the Blu Ray has all of that, glorious levels of film grain, the resolution is also really nice. I can tell this was an HD scan.

This missing scene has me spooked though, it's so small but I expect to see it and I'm sad it isn't there anymore, would love to find out the story on this. I know Kino's recent Spaceballs BD was missing some small audio things that people remember, but Kino claim those aren't in the master they got, so it would seem the stuff people were used to hearing was added for home video all these years.

... in regards to the image quality of the new North Shore disc, we must remember that the film was shot on 16mm for budgetary reasons. The previous streaming version didn't look great. But the new Blu-ray from Kino looks comparatively amazing. The image is cleaner and more vibrant than ever before seen, much like Pump Up the Volume from Warner Archive. The old HDNet broadcast of PUTV was muddy but watchable vs. the Blu-ray which looks incredible. So North Shore is a big win on Blu plus you get all the special features.. and they're really good. Now as to the missing scene, I'll have to leave that to the experts. I hadn't seen the film enough times to notice it, but it doesn't surprise me at all.

That makes a lot of sense, I assumed it might be Super35. The beginning of the movie in the wave pool looks like it was shot with 8mm or something.

Yes, that's Gerry Lopez. He's also interviewed in the special features on the Blu... along with the rest of the cast and director, producer, etc.. Here's a nice review of the new disc.. https://themovieisle.com/2021/04/06/...udio-classics/

I don’t yet have North Shore on Blu-ray but very strange to hear it’s missing that scene. It’s always been there on my dvd and vhs copies.

Surprised North Shore didn’t get its own thread till now. I always loved this movie and every song on its soundtrack. Terrific cast and Matt Adler was a very likable lead who seemed totally at ease in the role. Surprised this ended up the only movie where he got to be the lead. Don’t know why this bombed at the box office, but it definitely gained a cult following when it hit video and cable. I was very pleasantly surprised by the plentiful interview extras on the dvd release.

Thank you, someone else knows this scene! I've seen this movie more than anyone should ever see a movie, and I know every inch of it, as soon as it wasn't there my radar went off.

I agree great film. Love Adler, only other notable films I saw him in were Dream a Little Dream and Flight of the Navigator, thought he was a pretty good lead. Love John Philbin, Turtle is a legend, anytime I see him in Return of the Living Dead and Point Break I giggle a little.

When I saw this as a kid it's partly what motivated me to start surfing because I happened to live in Hawaii at the time and later moved to Florida, same with Rad and riding bikes. Movies back then definitely were something special.

I did not post in the Kino thread, wasn't sure where that was. Maybe someone can link it there please? I did email Kino, but I didn't link them this thread or send caps, I just told them what was up when I watched the disc.

The Kino thread is here: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=241616

That's really surprising to hear about the scene missing. I got it cheap from Target on their B2G1 sale, but just haven't gotten around to watching it all the way through yet. I guess I'll hold onto the old DVD for now...

But yeah, I do know the exact scene you posted about above.

It could be a scene that the director wanted added in for the home video release. I never saw the movie in theaters but it may never have been there to begin with like some of you speculated. When a new scan of a catalog title is made this kind of thing can happen since they are usually working from a theatrical cut element.

Universal provides these masters to labels like Kino, it's not something Kino had any editorial control over. Or is any reason to be "spooked" about. You should probably ask the director or Universal themselves about it since nobody here seems to have ever seen the movie theatrically to confirm.

That's so strange that the Universal DVD has this scene, but an HD master they gave Kino doesn't. I wonder then which master the DVD came from, perhaps it was some D-VHS master for TV or something.

I think it would be a rare thing to find anyone who saw this in the theater, but I would certainly like to know if they remember this missing scene!

I saw the film theatrically in 1987, as the co-feature with BACK TO THE BEACH. i don't recall if that scene was in the theatrical version or not.

This situation reminds me of the confusion with Annette Funicello's solo performance of "I'll Never Change Him" from BEACH BLANKET BINGO. That scene was reportedly cut from the theatrical prints after the first week or two of
release, and the song was re-tooled for Deborah Walley in SKI PARTY.

When BEACH BLANKET BINGO was released to TV, the scene with Annette's solo song was reinstated. Full-frame versions on channels like AMC contained that scene. Perhaps it was re-added to pad the film's TV running time.

However, when BBB was remastered for widescreen DVD, Annette's solo song was missing again, probably because it had been removed from the theatrical release prints.

Perhaps the scene from NORTH SHORE has had a similar history?

Man, Back to the Beach is awesome, I've been hankering for a Blu of that for ages.

Yeah, this seems more and more like some sort of TV cut has been kicking around for years and Kino got a straight theatrical master for their disc which no one has ever had until now. I've been thinking there may even be other certain small little differences, but I don't think I picked up on anything big like this missing scene. It would be interesting to do a frame by frame comparison with the DVD.

I also love this movie and have seen it many times. I previously purchased it on Amazon for streaming, but I am thinking about picking it up on Blu-ray, ripping it, extracting the missing scene from another source and splicing it together and color correcting it in Resolve and burning a new beautiful ultimate version to disc. I have been doing this with many of my favorite movies lately and breathing new life into them. If the noise is excessive, I have gotten pretty good at using Neat Video to remove the noise and keep all of the detail. The noise adds a false sense of sharpness, so I usually sharpen the image ever so slightly with Resolve to compensate. This movie has never looked great, and I didn't know why until I saw that it was shot on 16mm in this thread.
