Ceiling speakers do not provide the same level of sound quality when compared to traditional speakers. We purchased a pre-existing home a couple of years ago and due to the wife not wanting to see speakers on the floor or wall (on-wall, not in-wall) in the living room home theater setup, I had to do ceiling speakers. I ended up going with Speakercraft Aim 8 series speakers which sound okay, but they do not sound nearly as good as traditional speakers IMO. As a matter of fact, I'm redoing my upstairs game room this week to become my new mancave. The game room will have a 61" Samsung LED DLP, Pioneer Elite AVR, Def Tech speakers (SM450's for the fronts, a CLR2002 as center and BPX1.2 for surrounds) with an SVS sub finishing things off. This is now where I'll be watching most things. Moral to the story - do the right thing the first time and avoid ceiling speakers. It will save you money down the road!

Hmm; the only way I would use ceiling speakers would be for my rear surrounds. I would see what brand they used. If it is an off-brand that you can get at Lowes or Radioshack, I would replace it with Monitor Audio or Polk. Both make a good in-ceiling speaker. If you do decide to keep them, at least make sure your front sound stage are either floor standing or bookshelves. I wouldn't use in-ceiling for the fronts and center.

There are some very good in-wall and in-ceiling speakers out there....... You can get a 5.1 set of them from $1,000 or so..... to $50,000 depending on what ones you want, but the ones that come in a pre-built house like that, will more than likely (99% chance) not be good quality at all.
If the house is built with them, then it'll be wired for them, and you could always just replace them with better speakers ![]() |

If you're going to look at replacing them, the Mirage Omnicans seem to be among the better in-ceiling speakers. They may be worth looking at as well. As pointed out already, the house is pre-wired for them, and even if you wanted to go with a bigger speaker, you would only have to make the hole in the ceiling a little bigger.
