Aronofsky and Paul Thomas Anderson are way too low on that list. Zack Snyder being ahead of them on any list of directors is pretty funny. This list seems to be first and foremost focused on box office success more than anything else.

So John Favreau makes the list and Francis Ford Coppola, Woody Allen, Sidney Lumet and Spike Lee don't?

List is invalid.

I didn't even pay attention to that. And what's funny I can name one movie from each of those directors that will put Favreau's whole career to shame.

that's a good point. What makes a director active?

Being alive or actually directing a movie within the last 5 years?

This can't be a serious list. Judd Apatow? Much as I love Peter Jackson, number two? Besides LOTR what has he done that would rank him above Eastwood and Howard? Steven Soderbergh at number five? Where are Zemeckis and Coppola?

Judd Apatow? I'd put Tony Gilroy on this list before him.

Their extended title: With the Oscars on our minds, we're counting down the most talented, in-demand filmmakers behind the camera today, a list including Zack Snyder, James Cameron, Guillermo del Toro -- and our No. 1

25. JON FAVREAU

THE EVIDENCE: Elf (2003), Iron Man (2008)

WHY HIM: How could we not include the man who gave us Zooey Deschanel and Will Ferrell singing ''Baby, It's Cold Outside''? With Elf, Favreau gave us one of the precious few Christmas movies in recent memory due to become a classic. Why does it work? Probably because of Ferrell's fruitcake earnestness as well as a visual style reminiscent of Rankin/Bass classics. Topping himself, Favreau marshaled a newfound tech savvy to help launch Robert Downey Jr. back onto the A-list with the comic-book yarn Iron Man. — Christian Blauvelt

It's all about demand today...according to them.

Woody Allen's done a film a year for the last five years. Spike did Miracle at St Anna's in 08 & Inside Man in 06. Not necessarily saying either of them deserve it but they're certainly as active as others on the list.

I'm a little dismayed at no David Cronenberg or Robert Rodriguez.
