Default Best Picture? What Should Have Won?

What film... didn't desrve to win? What film should replace it?

Example: 1998: Shakespeare in Love didn't deserve it. Saving Private Ryan did.

I think everyone should refuse them. The only concession I could make would be to have a "ten best" award or something.

Boiling it down to "this guy was better than that guy" or "he's dead, someone alive should get the glory so he can make more bucks" just fails the common sense test.

Even worse, all the people who aren't in the top line on credits - I mean all of the craftspeople, and technical folks - just can't be compared on a basis like this. Again, there are mobs of people who should get rewarded, or at least recognized, each year.

I like the idea of giving every talented entertainer and industry worker recognition and appreciation, but this system sets up resentment, head-scratching, second-guessing, and huge expense for the public to ultimately fund.

Followed to its logical conclusion, filmgoers should wait until the Oscars are awarded, and see no non-winning films, since they couldn't make the grade. Or go, knowing that they're viewing "second-best", substandard fare. The whole scenario smells to high heaven.

It's not about art, and since I have absolutely no interest in counting the receipts at the box office, the whole thing is a yawn to me.

star wars over annie hall. i love annie hall and it was a great movie, but star wars was a superbly-written movie that achieved more than any other film had in its time. of course it wasn't as highly regarded then as it is now, but people could still understand its breakthroughs. it had a masterful and incredibly in-depth plot and received raving reviews from critics. oh well, in the end it is only a tangible award. in the grand scheme of things, star wars went on to gain much greater stardom than annie hall anyways.

Personally, I think The Pianist, and Gangs of New York was better than Chicago.

... and Crash should have never won Best Picture either.

Fully agree..Shakespeare in Love was undeserving that year. A total disgrace that it won over Saving Private Ryan.

Let's hope Harvey Weinstein doesn't work his behind-the-scenes magic again tonight with The Reader.

Actually, they were nominated in the same category in the exact same year. and I agree with you that Titanic was plenty deserving of winning that award. I can't remember a movie that was so top notch in so many categories. For some reason, it has turned into a love-it or hate-it film.

2005
Should have go to Brokeback Mountain or Munich instead of Crash.

1998
Should have go to at least Saving Private Ryan instead of Shakespeare in Love. (I do love The Thin Red Line, though)

1994
As good as Forest Gump is, The Shawshank Redemption should have won.

i know, but they didn't win the award in 1997. it was in 1998. just like the post above you which i also don't get. all those movies didn't in those years. they won in the following. i always think of brokeback moutain as 2006. it's just weird i guees. but i definitely think that year was awful. there was only one decent movie nominated. out of all the ones i saw. brokeback sucked. crash sucked. who should've won? good night and good luck. that movie was actually good. iit was fantastic actually. capote was good, but not oscar good. i don't get the academy sometimes.
