Default How do I receive TV 5.1 sound

I have a DVR box that I want to receive the 5.1 audio. When I connect an optical cable, it's still just 2.0 audio. Is there a certain set up for it?

My DVR is a Motorola DCH6416

I just have a regular HTiB right now. It's over 5 yrs old. I can connect audio through optical ins and coaxial ins. I have my PS3 connected via optical cable for audio, HDMI for video straight to tv. My DVR has a HDMI to the tv. I'm just looking to get the best audio from my DVR now.

I'm really not sure what you are asking.

And I'm oredering my Onkyo 606 or Yammy V663 after my gig this weekend!! Thats another topic.

are you receiving HD cable? if not..then you will not get 5.1 audio. it's only available for HDTV programming. standard TV will only be 2.0 audio... but your receiver can probably upconvert it to Dolby Pro logic II usually.

I am not familiar with your DVR.. but it could also be a menu setting in the DVR

This, and the other question is if that receiver can even decode Dolby Digital.

SD channels have 5.1 as well. Maybe you're thinking Digital?

If you have an HDMI ran to your TV from the DVR your going to need a sound output ran to your receiver. Be it an optical or digital coaxial. I guess it's whatever connection you have open/available from your DVR to your receiver. If there's a settings mode your going to have to tell your receiver to use whatever audio source to get the sound. How do you have it hooked up now? R/L?

My old HTiB system only had an input for R/L and Digital Coaxial.. That sucked because I owned nothing that had a Digital Coax out. And the best video signal was S-Video.....

ok. that's probably it since my receiver doesn't take HDMI audio. It does up convert to pro logic, but I'm not a fan of it too much.

Thanks for helping me out.

digital cable and HD cable will allow 5.1 audio. analog cable will not.
On my cabel/dvr box i had to go in and set the sound to digital. If I don't do that then i only get stereo sound. That was true via optical cable and hdmi cable.

No problem. If you have a HTiB now, will your current speakers and sub work with the Onkyo/Panasonic receiver you're wanting to buy? I was going to just buy a receiver but my old sub, which was a POS anyhow, wouldn't work so I was going to have to buy one. The cost of buying both was close to buying the Onkyo set up I have now so I just bought the whole thing.

I'm just curious since you said you were just buying a new receiver.

I'm having the same problem with my Rogers box. I have it connected to my receiver via digital optical and am only getting pro-logic playback (even when the show is HD 5.1). I have assigned the digital connection in the receiver as optical but still no luck.

It sounds like you need to find out how to configure the cable box to output DD 5.1. What model box does Rogers use?

It's an 8300 PVR. I tried to set up the box, but would only allow for video settings. I'm not sure what is wrong. I checked the receiver to box connection and assignment and all is ok. I have a similar box in the bedroom (HD, but not PVR) and it works fine with 5.1.

Here's a link to the setup guide for the Scientific Atlanta 8300HD PVR. It says there are audio configurations including setups for DD 5.1 output.

I have the same 8300 HD DVR, all you have to do is run an HDMI cable from the DVR to the A/V & from the A/V to the TV. Now on the 8300 set the audio to HDMI & all should work just fine. This is how I have it & it works perfect.

EDIT: I'm sorry I read your 2nd to the last post wrong, no HDMI on your A/V.

Very simple.

Run an optical/coaxial OUT from your box, and IN to your receiver. Then go to Settings/Menu, Devices, and change your Audio from (whatever it's at usually, mine is HDMI) to Digital/Dolby.

Not sure if this is still the case, but I know that Rogers specifically, in Canada, had major issues with its 8300HD PVRs handling HDMI audio. It would always output 2.0 PCM over HDMI, regardless of setting. Just a weird little tidbit I thought I'd point out, since I have to recite it to everyone who inquires as to why I have an optical cable on my PVR.

As the OP doesn't use HDMI for audio though, this is obviously not the problem. I suggest the problem is what was pointed out, that the settings on the PVR default to HDMI for digital audio. To change that;

1) Press "Settings" twice on the remote;
2) Scroll down to "Audio: Digital Out";
3) Select "Dolby Digital" from the list
*Note, you may first have to select "Other", and then return to select "Dolby Digital".

Hope that's all it is! Also, sadly if you're with Rogers, there is very, very little 5.1 programming, relative to the amount of 2.0 programming there is.

EDIT: I realize I'm fixing someone other than the OP's problems, my apologies. I am not, however, familiar with the OP's DVR, but assume it is a similar audio setup issue.
