I couldn't find a similar poll so sorry if I am repeating this. However I think my poll has more conclusive answers.
I can't draw any conclusions from just speculation so I'll wait for votes. I read that if a poll has over 50 votes it shows a trend. It if has over 100 votes it is usually about 98% accurate. Any traditional HD antenna reception should be considered OTA (Over the Air). Any service which is wired into your home, including DSL, should be considered cable. Any Dish-type device is naturally considered Dish. Last edited by tron3; 04-11-2008 at 04:00 PM. |

Hello
I am not certain how you are polling, but if it is by reply; then this is my vote. Definitively, it is OTA. I have watched about 8K/hrs of terrestrial broadcast on many receivers over the years, and it is truly remarkable, the quality of OTA. Of course, the receivers differ in quality, as expected, with some simply terrible. For a year, I concurrently had Direct TV as well to compare with OTA. While Direct TV was generally fine, the OTA was noticeably better. [I have subsequently learned that Direct TV broadcasts at a lower resolution than OTA; making sense of the difference. Dish Network is interesting at this point, but so far, I have not been in a position to compare it to OTA.] Cable, with Comcast, is simply unacceptable. It is terrible, with many individuals that I have encountered, indicating that it is not really much different from the Standard Definition [SD] signal quality. Whenever I see it on rear projection or flat panels, it appears to be very poor; akin to a low quality analog signal. Of course, I am comparing to a pristine high quality OTA Signal that I watch daily on a high quality calibrated display with the highest quality HDTV Tuners, making things quite easy for me to observe differences. Well, perhaps this is far more of a response than requested/required, but it is my simple frame of reference relative to your polling, so my apology if it is too much. Thank You |

Jib, if you have not done so, select an option at the top of the screen and click "vote". Thanks for your insight as well.
So far I am shocked at OTA votes being that high. Thought for sure it would be near the bottom. Tack on the cable/dish & OTA users and that number is even higher. |

See, I guess I'm the opposite (I'm one of those OTA only votes btw). I would think that the OTA numbers would be pretty decent in a group like this, as it's typically higher quality than say, NBC on Direct, and it's free to boot.

I get my local HD channels OTA, considering signing up for HD service with my DishNetwork account. I am not looking forward to the extra $30 on the bill though.

I have an old ampliefied rabbit-ears, that I bought new at Wal-Mart for $25, in 1999. I doubt it is even rated to pick up HD channels. I even have to tinfoil some of the antena connections to keep the antenna on.
It picks up all OTA HD channels, and people constantly remark at the sharpness of the picture. I'm about 20 miles from the broadcast towers, though. I may get a nicer one to put outside, but this works just fine. Goes to show that just because you pay a lot for cable/dish, doesn't mean it will be better. (p.s., I used to work for Charter, and I have since hated the cable companies. I have internet only, because my work pays for it) |
