Bethesda, Obsidian Announce Fallout: New Vegas

Bethesda Softworks announced that Obsidian Entertainment is developing a brand-new Fallout game titled Fallout: New Vegas, to release next year on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.

Gamasutra was at Bethesda's event in London to hear the game announced by marketing and PR VP Pete Hines, who provided few specifics on the game's engine, gameplay or perspective -- but did note the game's neither a Fallout sequel nor a spin-off.

"It's not Fallout Tactics -- it's not Brotherhood Of Steel," said Hines. "It has no impact on what [Fallout EP] Todd Howard and his guys are planning."

A number of Obsidian staff are veterans of Black Isle's original Fallout games. "We've really been enjoying working with [Obsidian] on it," Hines said.

"That is all we're going to say about it right now," he added.

Not sure about the acquired MMO rights. However, it'd make complete sense to attach Obsidian who've the credentials for the genre if that was the case. It'll be interesting to see how this develops.

At least they are announcing that they are going to be releasing it on the PS3.

i believe bethesda already confirmed they have been working on the next elder scrolls. theyre just giving another developer the chance to work on the next fallout.

Thats good news, I didnt know Bethesda had confirmed another Elder scrolls If Obsidian was founded by the people from the Black Isle team who made the original Fallout. theyre definately the right developer for the job

i take it back. they didnt really come out and say it but interviews with thier people have stated that they hope to release the next elder scrolls next year. so that would indicate that they must be working on it now to release next year. besides, if another developer is working on the next fallout, bethesda must be doing something in the meantime besides working on thier tans.

there is an ongoing thread over at the bethesda forums that one of the mods started. theyre asking for elderscrolls V suggestions.

I believe they are currently making one. Last time I checked their wiki, they were in development of a new one.

you mean on fallout vegas, not Elder 5? that's good news.

even though obsidian is working directly on it, betheseda will no doubt have to supervise/manage, hopefully not using up valuable time that could be spent developing underground cave maps / natural scenes / nasty goblins in elder 5

Correct. A few of the original key Fallout Creators are now at Obsidian, so they're now working on the new game. When Bethesda acquired the rights to Fallout from Interplay, part of the deal allowed Interplay to create an MMO based on the Fallout universe. That deal was recently expired as expired, so Interplay cannot make any more Fallout games. I'm guessing Bethesda and Obsidian waited for the expiration of the MMO deal, so they could announce Fallout: New Vegas.

MMO makes the most sense given that wording, but who knows.

I'll be more excited about the news when we get concrete details about the game. Is it first-person, or third-person like the previous games from these creators? Single-player or MMO? Something completely different?

I want Elder Scrolls V too. Sooner rather than later.
