Question Blu-Ray 1080p Help Please.

I need help understanding how PS3 handles Blu-Ray movies when my HDTV can only handle up to 1080i.

My question is, I notice that all Blu-Ray movies says that it is 1080p.
My HDTV can only handle 480i, 480p and 1080i. No 720p and no 1080p.

So when I am watching a Blu-Ray disc using my PS3, what resolution am I watching? If it is 480p, How can I get 1080i?

BTW, no HDMI inputs on HDTV either. Only component. I am using high quality component cables.

Please help. Because it all looks like 480p to me.

Just go to the video settings menu in the PS3 setup menu, and set your output resolution to 1080i. The 1080p on the blu-ray itself means that the video was encoded on the disc at 1920x1080 pixels.

The resolution you are watching at is determined by what your PS3's output resolution is set to right now. Like I said, go to the video (or display, I can't remember the actual word they use) settings, and adjust the output resolution to 1080i, then your PS3 will output at 1080i, and everything should look great.

Yes, my setup is currently showing that I chose 1080i as the display settings.

The only Blu-Ray movie I have watch is Talledega Nights. It's the only BD movie I own right now. Why do I get small black bars on top and bottom of screen though? I dont get it. Shouldnt BD movies fill my entire TV screen? It is a widescreen.

First, to answer your earlier question about the black bars, that is the same thing as certain regular DVDs not filling up your entire screen. It's all about the aspect ratio in which the film was shot. This link will explain it more: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=5528

As for your most recent question: Yes, some BD movies look better than others. It depends on how the movie was filmed, encoded to the blu-ray master, degradation of the source material, etc. The Fifth Element is being re-mastered and re-released in July because the first Blu-ray release did not look very good. So, even the same movie can look different with two different blu-ray releases (only if a new master is made for the new edition).

Use the search function on the forum, and browse the "blu-ray movies" section for more answers to your questions.
