TDK's picture quality is some of the worst in my blu-ray collection hell I have movies made in the late 90's (5th element) with alot better picture quality. Just one thing that puzzles me is that people insist on praising the picture quality of this transfer, were this reviewers simply praising the IMAX sequences alone? if so I agree but for the other scenes im disappointed on how people are too scared to criticize TDK's PQ.

OP - just out of curiosity, what blurays do you consider to have great PQ? i'd like to get an understanding for your own personal PQ rating system. many people obviously consider TDK to have incredible PQ--Imax and non-imax scenes alike--and i see no problem with you not thinking that way; I would just like to understand why (i.e. specific problems you have with it).

Boy did we ever go back and forth on the Mega Thread for this movie regarding the PQ. This is a top notch effort by Warner but not reference I feel was the majority's opinion.
I actually got another player and viewed this movie utilizing that afterwards. The non-Imax scenes were that much better but still overall didn't boost this to reference quality. I probably spent more buying this BD than most everyone cause I really like it and wanted it early (got it about 2 1/2 weeks ahead of release date) and I'm quite happy with it! The IMAX Scenes are gorgeous, reference material. The 35mm parts do indeed look a tad processed, yes. It's already been explained why that is the case above. Nevertheless in motion they still look good to very good and there isn't a really huge drop-off in pq when the switches from IMAX to 35mm occur.

Obviously im not going to get anywhere trying to prove this but the trailers for movie imo had alot better picture quality and the flesh tones and colors were alot more accurate and close to reality then the boosted up contrast, black crushing, oversharpness, and much pushing of red and blue tint in the final product.
Compare the trailers to the movie you'll see what im talking about. |
