Default X-Men III poor quality?

Just bought the Sony BDP-S1 and a handful of movies but last night I watched X-Men III and found the quality hardly better than a regular DVD. Watched Stargate and The Fifth Element the previous nights and found the image quality was just stunning. Also, about half way into the movie the player locked-up and would not respond to any commands. Had to power down the player and restart the movie in order to finish. I guess my question would be did anyone else watch this movie and found the image to be substandard? My TV is also a Sony...55" SXRD.

Wow, that is quite the opposite of the general consensus here, TFE good, X3 bad, strange, there must be something up with your setup if you aren't getting good PQ with X3. This is of course you are not infact noticing the film grain and unknowingly complaining about that.

Nope.

Xmen III looked great here. Fifth Element is the disc I would have expected and understood some letdown on, but not Xmen III.

FWIW, the movie was shot with a certain color palette and tone that some people may like and others may not, but I found the PQ as a whole to be damned good.

YMMV I guess.

I have the same setup but its the other way around. Xmen 3 is stellar and The Fifth Element is the weak link. Stargate is not bad but not as good as Xmen 3, Personal taste must be dictating your thoughts on this issue but in all honesty Xmen is the best of the bunch

Not me... comparing the Superbit Fifth Element upconverted to 1080i via HDMI to the Blu-Ray version at 1080i via HDMI... the BD is more like a photograph - except for the very first scene of "donkey boy" which looks like crap.

I found that X-3 was a little soft for my liking but much better than the SD version which was softer than the former two. If you want a killer PQ get the Discovery HD BD of Australia. Italy is grrat too but the one on China is terrible.

When I saw X-men 3 on a Samsung LCD monitor at a local store, it was a grain-like mess. When I actually owned it and watched it on my CRT RPTV and a friend's Sony LCD RPTV it was glorious, and the particular scenes I saw being a mess were fine.

So, I can confirm it looks different on different sets. One possibility is the colour depth of LCD panels. If it is only 6-bit that may cause issues that disappear on 8-bit panels. (CRT is basically unlimitted colour depth).

But, an SXRD should be fine. Curious.

Thanks for the replys guys...then its probably just me. To me, watching the movie was like seeing the images thru frosted glass. I had expected a bit more after watching the other two movies.
