Oh, wow.

It's called grain. Please do a search for "film grain" as there are more threads about this than I care to count.

I honestly think the biggest enemy to large-scale blu-ray adoption is a fundamental lack of understanding of how movies are made.

how can someone search for something they may not even know exists??

not a very helpful answer.

...which is why answers such as above do nothing to help the situation.

If you're gonna take the time to reply, at least be helpful.

Have you done a basic calibration of your TV yet?

This can help to minimize the effects of grain. If that is indeed what you are seeing?

I don't think you CAN minimize the effects of grain, it's pretty much part of the movie. I think the best you can do is try to enjoy a movie regardless of it...that's what I do.

Everybody has their own way of helping. Some take the harsh approach.

miicho, you need to also understand that some movies are very heavy with grain. It's not necessarily a bad thing in most cases. Take Kill Bill volumes 1 and 2, for instance. Both have a very nice layer of grain that does just what it's supposed to: it serves to protect the image of the film. Film grain has information about the image, and when there's too much grain reduction, the film can start to look fake.

too much sharpness or contrast can overly enhance the grain, making people more sensitive and aware to its presence.

Calibration [adjusting picture levels] can minimize its effect (not to be mistaken with removal of said grain). Will also give you a more accurate picture overall.

Definitely turning down sharpness if it's up or any kind of post-processing image "enhancements" will help. Contrast if it's cranked can as well. Try googling your set # and "calibration settings" to at least get an idea of what others have done. There's also a section for it on this site.

...sorry, but I just see so many of these threads that it irritates me to see the whole process of explanation have to occur all over again. Hopefully the above is more helpful.

And miicho you should read the link given earlier to explain grain. We don't need another person new to Blu-ray throwing a tantrum about something they don't understand.

Cool Dial Down the Detail Enhancement...

It may be caused by a Detail Enhancement setting on your display that is overly enhancing the grain. We saw this happen in some scenes on the Planet Earth Blu-rays as they are highly detailed HD film (some static is in the source too on these BTW). If you dial down or turn off detail enhancement, it will go away. In the case of our Sony, I had to make changes in the Service Menu as well.
