Default Blu-ray vs dvd upscale

without going into too many details, i have a 139" screen, projector system 10,000:1 ratio...

anyways, my blu-ray is a ps3
i have watched the same movie on dvd (upscaled thru ps3) and blu-ray, i can not tell any difference, i sit about 13-14 feet back

just want some opinions? why should i shell out $20-$35 upgrading dvds?

like independence day? etc...
they look just fine (even before upscale), but i can't tell much of a difference, and is it really worth the $, i do by all new movies (like i am legend on blu-ray when cheaper than $25 at amazon)

anyways, point is, just wondering why everyone is willing to shell out $30 for a movie they bought for $20 already, i'd have to watch it 10x or better to justify AND can not tell a difference, i was told it was because my screen was so large, anyways, renting at blockbuster.com for $18/month unlimited rentals on blu-ray is nice

Well i you can't tell a difference with ID4 DVD vs Blu-ray there's a diffinitive problems with you,re setup. I own both, while i have a 107 inch screen and this is not a recent release it's ton better on my Z2000 LCD 1080p projector. This DVD have lots of EE too. Plus, if you're setup for sound DTS HD MA 5.1 on this title Rocks!

Some people want to do it. Why try and justify other peoples purchases? Take a Cars and an I,Robot and call me in the morning.

i havent seen id4 on bluray yet, but unimpressed on previous viewings, believe me i want to be

the ONLY reason i built this house was for my theater room, it is 24 by 28, and has pool table at that end with Wii, x360, ps3 setup, all prewired with klipsch speakers, the best i could buy the big hd screen, projector is where i saved some $, might have been dumb, but already spent a bunch and built a new home for it

i have the ps3 set right, not sure about the audio, i checked and it is on linear pcm, so i should receive BEST sound possible RIGHT? or not? i want all to play n 5.1 or greater and in hd audio or truehd if possible

If you have a 140" screen and you can't tell the difference, then something is wrong with your system setup.

Make sure the system is set to 1080p and that you have it hooked up through HDMI

it is hdmi, everything is set to hdmi 1920x1080

again i was told that 50" or less well be MUCH easier to see since pixels are condensed to small space, 139" is spread out

BELIEVE ME PIC LOOKS AWESOME, but does not the ps3 upscale to 180 too, it may be 1080i but still looks GREAT and can't tell

I have repurchased a number of my movies. I just watched Cloverfield on blu-ray and I damn sure noticed the difference. And I try to find the best deals I can when I buy them. I've gotten a lot of them from amazon.com and half.com. You can usually get them for 20 bucks or less.

Is everything set correctly in your projector? Is it reporting back 1080p input on the display?

again, does the ps3 upscaler not make up the difference, hence the reason i can not tell much of one if any on my screen

Artificially filling in the blanks by virtual duplication of available signal information can not recreate detail that is removed for DVD. Even the best scaling from HQV, Gennum, or VRS can't do that. I've done numerous DVD to BD comparisons and the difference has never been subtle. Well...except for most of 28 Days Later, but in that case it was because the film was shot at a resolution much lower than 1080. Even soft BDs have significantly greater image depth and high frequency detail than their DVD counterparts, not to mention reduced if not eliminated ringing, which is a by product of scaling a 1080p master to 480i that plagues almost every DVD. Then there's the sound; TrueHD, DTS MA, PCM hardly compare to 384-448kbps DD. Even 640kbps DD shows distinct improvements over DVD.

I'm viewing on only a 92" screen from a distance of 1.2x the screen width, basically the equivalent of sitting between midway and the very back in a theater, depending on the particular cinema layout. Of course the further you move away from the screen, the more forgiving low quality formats like DVD tend to become. On the 52" 1080p we keep in the living room, DVD looks much more agreeable at normal viewing distances of 3x screen width or more. But, the visual gains of higher quality sources are proportionally magnified the larger the screen. The usual culprits are processing deficiencies like a 1080p display that doesn't support direct 24p and/or a player that bobs 1080i instead of doing proper inverse telecine resulting in a picture that's roughly 540p instead of 1080p; or equipment limitations like a display that accepts 1080p but has a native panel resolution of only 720p, even with good quality conversion a significant chunk of information gets lost in the process.

The PS3 is 24p capable now (video taken essentially direct off the disc without any processing - may need firmware update or change in setup menu), if your display will accept a 24Hz signal that should be the sweetspot. If it won't, you're limited to the quality deinterlacing of either the PS3 or the display, and at the screen size you're viewing on, deficiencies in the processing will be made more apparent. I'm not even sure the PS3 will deinterlace 1080i to 1080p/60. At one time I don't think it would. Point is keep working at it. When you're finally seeing BD at it's best, there's no comparison; I promise.

I can tell a huge amount of difference on ID4 on my 56" between DVD and Blu-ray, I don't know what to tell you

Definately pick up i Robot, Ratatouille or cars and get back to us. If those don't knock your socks off, something is wrong

I am interested in this debate as the same thought has often occured to me. I have upgraded a lot of my favourite films to Bluray and obviously in most cases notice the difference.

However, the grey area I have is with CGI Cartoons. I have Cars on Bluray and it looks great, however I have Ratatouille on DVD and it also looks great, I'm mean so incredibly good that I cannot possibly imagine it could look significantly better. My theory is that the upscalling on computer generated images must almost be as good to be Bluray quality.

I am going to have to rent or borrow a copy of Ratatoille to do a side by side comparison but for my money the DVD version is more than sufficient.

I have a 92 inch screen and the difference is enormous. Either you have poor eyesight or there is something wrong with your setup.

There's either a problem with your setup, or your eyes.

Period. This is not up for argument.
