Default Blu-ray newbie - which player to purchase?

well hows it going every1. well i am new here but ive been in the back ground lurken for awhile now. ive finally decided to take the plunge and buy an bluray player. i was wondering if anybody had any ideas on which one to buy? i was looking at either the ps3 or the new sony bdp-s300. any thoughts would be helpful. also i was at bestbuy looking at all the blu ray players and movies and the damm workers there kept tryin to shove hddvd down my throat. sayin it was going to win the format war and that all the sudios supported hddvd and that i would be wasting my money on bluray. this damm worker was pissing me off so much that i had to tell him to stop push is own damm thoughts on me and leave me to make my own decisions and that my decision was bluray all the way baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! are the workers there on some kind of incentive program for selling hddvd crap?

That was my experience at BB/Future shop as well. Same lies and story about HD-DVD having all the studios, etc etc. They have been trained as far as I'm concerned..since too many of them repeat the same story verbatim..across stores.

Edit: As you can see I love the PS3. Part of the reason is the ease of upgrades and future-proofing with the Cell at it's disposal. Add in the media center stuff, games, etc and well I personally have a hard time going for standalones, although I can appreciate others don't see it that way.

I've said this in other threads but it's worth repeating: I wouldn't take any HD advice from a kid who was probably working in the Kitchen appliance section yesterday and was assigned to TV's today. These kids have no training other than what the corporate manual tells their managers to tell them.

Funny...but about 7 years ago CC and BB gave people that worked in the electronic department commissions. In both CC and BB greed they quit doing this. When they did give commissions I had a friend who worked at BB then CC and all he would do was study electronics stuff to become an expert and be able to make bigger sales. Now adays you got kids coming to work at BB and CC electronic dept who just quit there jobs at McDonalds a week before. There used to be a wealth of knowledge coming from CC and BB but that was around 7 years ago.

By the way, get a ps3. The pq and sq should be the same as any other br player (and many people say it is better). If you don't have any use for games or a place to store music and pictures, get the 300.

Yes, since I also have a PS3 I can only recommend it as far as performance goes. But, it could be that the new Sony is less noisy. I have to admit that in very quiet scenes of a movie the fan of the PS3 annoys me. Besides that, you can't go wrong.

i dont do much gaming like i used too, but old hadits do die hard thats why i am having trouble picking one or the other. as for my music its all on my computer now and on my mp3 player. i leaning towards the s300 cause mainly want it for movies. but with the ps3 i get movies and games, damit here i go agian back and forth i just need to flip a coin or something. i hate those damm workers at bb but i love to go and look at the 1080p tv with the blu ray player hooked up and watch the videos, damm its pretty, sooooo pretty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

I opted for the PS3, and if I got a second player I'd probably get a second PS3. Incredible Blu-Ray capability and plays games too! Granted, if the 300 series Sony was considerably cheaper I'd consider it, but for now, I'd go PS3 again.

I'm more of a casual gamer myself..although Warhawk is tempting me over and over.. the kids are the ones that get the real use out it for gaming.

The one thing that has stood out for me personally over even all THAT functionality is the quality. The quality far exceeded the hype for me. It was unexpected to a certain degree. Check my sig and the reputation of Anthem .. up until the PS3 it was the nicest piece of equipment I've owned in my life and it was around $3500 (cdn). The PS3 is built better IMO.

i have a ps3 and am very happy with it but i also play games. i would think the sony bdp-s300 will have a better picture since its made to just play movies. i'm getting my dad one for christmas since he won't play games.

Future Shop? You must be Canadian, like me...

I notice that there are very few print ads that promote Blu-ray discs and players (at least here in Calgary) which annoys me a little, and I agree that they're probably trained to pitch HD-DVD. I think, for the most part, that Canadians are behind the curve when it comes to being informed about the next gen HD formats. Maybe Canadian retailers have a lot of HD-DVD players in stock that aren't moving, and as a result push it more.

As to the OP, it's been stated here before that the PS3 is probably the best Blu-ray player for it's price. Not to mention you get access to a gaming console, media center (web-browser/photo storage and display/music player (store entire CD collections on the Hard Drive, and MP3's)/video (DVD/Blu-Ray/media like home movies stored on the HDD)/access to the playstation store/ and the PSN friendlist, with which I had a 2 hour video/voice chat with a friend in California, the other day.

Most stores run a spiff program where they tell these kids there will be a bonus if they sell some of the overstock in the back room. This is a common problem with HDDVD players.

They've been saying that since last year when the PS3 was launched. These 3 things..

1. No studio support
2. More expensive discs
3. Will be dead by next year (2007) so don't waste your money on blu-ray.

Nothing to do with overstock I'm afraid. I went on a fishing expedition and it was the same bullcrap being repeated across the board. The first guy wasn't too happy when I called him on his bullcrap..he was used to J6P and getting away with his lies.

Especially when you show them their own in-store discs of where the studio support is.

That's the best way too shut them up pretty quick...although I'm sure they will still spout the same lie to the next customer..

Welcome

It seems damn near impossible to find electronic store employees who really know their stuff. Thank God for the internet...back to your question.

I think you would be hard pressed to find a PS3 owner who is not happy with their purchase. The biggest complaint is the lack of games, which is rapidly improving. As a BD player it is one of the fastest, from my experience and from reading posts from many others. The value of the PS3 is immense. It is one sophisticated piece of equipment. With constant firmware updates, I think the PS3 will be relevent for a long time. Since it is also a gaming machine and a media center, I imagine that it will have a higher resale value than other BD players, if in the future you want something else, but why would you
