I would run HDMI from the PS3 & DirectTV to the Onkyo and a HDMI from the Onlyo to the TV.

The hdmi output on your receiver is going to be used to connect your receiver to the tv.

If it's anything like the 506, it does HDMI passthrough so you will not get audio from HDMI. If you want sound you'll need optical cables for your PS3 and HD DVR. You can still run the HDMI to the TV for video.

Edit: just read up on it. The new 507 does HDMI switching so you'll be fine with just HDMI cables. No need for optical.

He means that the 507 is a new model, as opposed to the older model (506) it's replacing.

You're going to love the way a receiver with HDMI capabilities works. That is a guarantee.

a directv HD/DVR box and upconverting DVD player will not output HD audio.
but if you have open HDMI plugs on the receiver may as well use them.

if you use the directv HDMI to the receiver. you will need the receiver on all the time even to watch the news.
