Default DVD that can hold 2000 Movies

A team of scientist headed by Dr. James Chen from Swineburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia has developed a new DVD format using nano technology increasing the spatial dimension of DVD disc from 3 to 5. The new DVD format is said to be capable of storing up to 2,000 movies! The new DVD technology is now contracted to Samsung and expected to be out in the market in 5 year time. Thumbs up

Well the first downside that comes to mind is, what happens if you get this super disc and lose it or break it? You're out 2000 movies!

Yeah that's one. ) But who would be so careless to let that happen? Blu-ray is now meeting an enemy in terms of capacity..

10 TB on single disk is mind-bobbling. If it is practical, it is a real breakthrough. I wonder what would be the reliability of this disk.

Maybe large, but only 300 DVD films or 200 Blu films. Not such an improvement. How many more special features can they fit onto a disk. Blu-ray disks are also getting large and also more than adequate for the films now. Just think though, the whole BSG on one disk. Never have to remember which episode is on what disk

I do rather wish that rather than giving us TV Seasons in hi-def, they would give them to us all on one disc. Surely that would save money on the overall cost. Even just DVD quality on Blu-Ray would still allow most seasons to be on one disc....

it would be tough to market "non-HD" content, for a TV series, all-on-one disk, yet you still need a Blu-ray player to play it

I agree though....

A new format could certainly change the way people buy movies..... (it would cripple the rental industry because they'd lose profitability in the game)

Imagine (let's not jump to 200 Blu-quality per disc quite yet) Series... such as the Alien Quadrilogy, Star Wars, LOTR, Rocky movies, Rambo movies, etc...

Each series on ONE DISC.... All Four Alien movies, with theatrical, director's cuts, AND extras.... in High-Def (extras and all) all with the convenience to access EVERYTHING with a menu from one disc!!!!

Or the Neil Young Archives on one disc

Later down the road (when the format is more accepted etc.) you'd see these "collections" of action/comedy/family/X-Mas/etc... being on one disc, rather than being just marketed and packaged together.

I'd love to see something like this happen, but I think 5 years is wishful thinking.

Maybe it will not really take 5 years. Around 3-4 years maybe. Tech today is in fast pace of development.
