Talking Great article revealing why HD DVD will not win, nor even survive...

Is it Time to Give Up on HD-DVD?

http://www.devindra.org/tech/2007/06...e-up-on-hd-dvd

My favorite part:

The players are cheap, but that’s mainly because the Toshiba is bleeding money on the hardware. By the end of this year we’ll most likely see Blu-ray players around $300 anyway. (I think it would be suicide for HD-DVD to try and undercut them then.)

Great reasoning. The only thing they failed to mention was that there has been an influx in the demand for family movies. You look at animation in the 80's and early 90's there was little or no difference than cartoons from the 50's. Today's animation showcases better detail and crisper images than most real-life movies. You look at any Blu-ray collection and you are bound to find a few animated titles. Once Pixar and Dreamworks step up, the HDDVD format will be on it's dying breath.

I agree with this 100%. The major kids movies are killer apps. I'll rebuy them all.

I’ve been a fan of HD-DVD ever since this whole new format war started. The technology just made sense:
Sounds like something I heard recently from a fat red headed owner of AICN.

the people who write these articles can spin their wheels for only so long before they contradict what the consumer thinks...

if they are clearly wrong and the consumer shows them that they know better....then they have to change their point of view....

it makes it easier when they know they were wrong of course...

I like how he linked to his past musings on the subject, to show that he was in fact an HD-DVD supporter, and a little anti-Sony. This way people can't try to say he's a Sony shill trying to pose as a former HD-DVD supporter. He showed how he has changed his tune, and laid out clear reasoning for it.

Dreamworks SKG is owned by Viacom (which also owns Paramount). I think Paramount and Dreamworks are operated independently.

Dreamworks Animation is independent.

Paramount handles film and home video distribution for both.

the one thing I found funny was that he mentioned the article in september 06...but said that he wrote it a year and a half ago...

unless I mis-read this, his math is WAY off...

and he still said he'd wait for a combo player...

if he was fully educated on the matter, he'd wait for the BD players to hit 300 and choose a side completely...

he brought up several valid points, though....points that we've been talking about forever and the people writing these articles are hopefully starting to come around...

and while BD isn't helping the PS3 right now...you'll see the difference later when FF13 and MGS4 come out....to name a few games that will likely fit on a BD50....which would not be possible on a 360 without having flashbacks to the PSX FF VII....where you had to switch out 4 discs...

He doesn't think that blu-ray is helping the PS3? Its really the only reason I even bought my PS3. I have no need for a gaming machine. But a machine that upconverts my DVDs and plays Blu-rays and AVCHD DVDs along with all the other features, now that just convinced my to jump in. I use it for gaming for probably 10% of the time. The rest is for playing Blu-ray and DVDs. I think some of the pundits (aka unknowledgable fan-boy reporters) don't really understand the consumer's wants any more.

And ehre's the wiki quote.

It began as an ambitious attempt by media moguls Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and David Geffen to create a new Hollywood studio, but in December 2005, the founders agreed to sell the studio to Viacom, the parent company of Paramount Pictures. The sale was completed in February 2006. DreamWorks' animation arm was spun-off in 2004, into DreamWorks Animation SKG, as such it will remain independent of Paramount/Viacom, however its films will be distributed worldwide by Paramount. In 2007, the winner of the reality film competition On the Lot will win a million-dollar development deal with DreamWorks.

Answer simply, it's for the most part, Viacom/Paramount. At least where it matters here.
