Default Swanni: How HD DVD Can Survive

I agree with this video hopefully the HD-DVD will not try any of these moves.

http://www.tvpredictions.com/swannihddvd061807.htm

For HD-DVD to survive they need to make a exclusive rental deal with Hollywood Video, Movie Gallery, or Netflix. Also HD-DVD camp would need to try and get Warner or Paramount Studios to go exclusive HD-DVD only. Perhaps we will see Toshiba lower prices to $99 to try and sell several million players. I was thinking the exact same things before I even watched the video.

Why would they go exclusive when the dual format studios havesome of the titles with the highest sales numbers?

Yes...those tactics would prove very bad! I'm sure BDA has got WB and Paramount wrapped around their fingers, just like HD-DVD. They'd have to have some pretty big pockets to make 'em go exclusive at this point. And as cheap as they are selling their players and lack of exclusive titles, I don't think they'll be willing to throw around too much more money!
I think WB and Paramount are more likely to go exclusive to the side of blu!

1. To grow the overall market faster. People are sitting on the sidelines until it's resolved.

2. They can release a wider selection of titles on one format rather having to deal with 2 formats..so their not going to see that much of a dip even without #1...although #2 will only help #1.

If Warner or Paramount is going to go exclusive, it's going to be on BD. Warner themselves said that BD sells 60% of their High-Def releases, and I'm sure about the same ratio is present for Paramount too. They aren't just going to ignore 2/3 of revenue. However, 60% is real close to 50%, so I don't think we will see anyone going BD exclusive until the number goes to about 75-80%.

I agree...that magic number would probably be in the 70th percentile.

Hollywood video is already 2:1 for BD in shelf space at my local store.

The Warner and Paramount titles almost always outsell the HD DVD equivalents according to videoscan.

The HD DVD players are already super cheap - any more discounting will be interpreted as a last ditch fire sale. Nobody (except maybe Kosty) will believe that it is a sustainable price point and therefore not a sustainable product ... period.

HD DVD's best chance is to be the 'red headed step child' in the HD family.

There is no way any of those companies are going to go exclusive HD-DVD. Blu-ray is dominating in all areas and even though its still a young format, the support for Blu-ray is overwelming. To go exclusive HD-DVD would put you in the VAST minority. Besides there are already several million Blu-ray players in homes, I dont care what anyone says the PS3 counts. I bought mine because it was the best deal on a BD player period. I figured worst case if Blu-ray tanked that I still had a game player, and I know many others did the same. Its all a matter of time now

This is a selfish Article,no way for Warner or Paramount going exclusivity ,They are gaining a lof of profit from BD even Without Batman Begins.

BUT AGAIN HERE we should mentioned the Superiority of BD which someone has a normal mind and thinking cant accept a lower Format.

Nobody is going to back a struggling format. Defections are more likely... Price cuts will only work if there is content but HDDVD content pipeline is pretty bad. Spiderman, Shreck, POTC vs. Knocked Up, Inside Man, Bourne. Wipeout is more likely.
