Default The Official "I Ordered the Oppo BDP-83" Thread

Since the review thread has been overtaken with comments about either buying or getting our Oppo's delivered, I thought I would start this thread so we can all talk about our buying experiences.

Let's leave the comments about performance and features to the Review Thread.

Default Just picked up my 83!

OPPO is a very efficient company, the phone support was great to answer all my questions, I ordered online once they sent me the e-mail ok to buy one, they had easy to track status, and sent an e-mail once it was ready. The unit was well packaged, with a printed manual!, and the set up was a breeze with very easy to use screen set up options. This is a fantastic player!

After being released to the general public, will there be any retail stores selling this unit?

No - OPPO Digital doesn't sell through retailers. Some other online distributors may pick it up, but I don't know when or how many.

Not even Amazon? They sell their DVD players so why not the BD players?

There have been several online stores that carried OPPO's past players (Amazon.com, Surf Audio/Video, AVS, and a couple of Canadian dealers). I wouldn't be surprised to see at least some of them carrying the BDP-83 at some point, but I doubt it will be soon. They are going to want to handle the sales directly until the initial rush has passed because of the potential issues with inventory. As I recall, the 983H was very slow to appear at other retailers last year due to the huge demand. The Canadian dealers may get it sooner, because they can offer a savings to Canadian customers over shipping straight from OPPO.

They do sell through retailers, just not many.

AVS Store is a legit OPPO seller, so is Amazon... there are a few others as well, iirc.

The thing is, the prices aren't really different... so there isn't much benefit in picking it up from elsewhere.

More on topic: I ordered mine this week (couple days ago after getting the priority email), so I should have mine pretty soon. I'm excited for the summer and not having to use my PS3 to watch movies, though I love it and it's my favorite console (I don't want to continue putting unnecessary wear on my launch 60GB PS3, seeing as BC and SACD are gone in the current PS3 units; PS3 generates lots of heat and a slight bit of noise, not 360 DVD drive levels, but it's noticeable enough; Launch PS3 is also an energy hog; BD83 will work with my Harmony out of the box, whereas I'd have to pick up a $60 adapter for the PS3).

I should have worded my previous post differently - they do sell through some online retailers, but not through any retail stores, and I doubt we'll see the BDP-83 anywhere except OPPO's site for a while.

Amazon has many of the popular oppo models already so the bdp83, which now everyone agrees is comparable to the second coming of christ, wouldn't be different.

Purchases are still by invite only at the moment.

You can sign up here and they'll notify you when you can purchase one.

The demand is kind of high on the initial run, so they are trying to give priority to those who showed interest earlier. Its $500.

Runs like a champ. The only things I miss from the PS3 are the 1.5x playback mode where audio still comes through (though on the BD83 the subtitles still work, so that's still workable - I liked watching some foreign movies that way if I'm in a hurry... movies in English just seem weird in 1.5x mode though) and a sleep timer of sorts (the idle system turn off after 1 hour on PS3 worked great for that).
