Default Downfiring sub on hardwood floor.

I have a question. I have a Hsu VTF2 MK 3 and it’s a down firing subwoofer that sits on a hardwood floor. Is it better acoustically to place a piece of carpet or a mat under the subwoofer? Thanks for your suggestions.

It would prolly be a good idea to get a riser, or yes at least put a small area rug underneath it.

I agree, the more you can decouple the sub from the floor, the better the response you will get from your sub. I built my riser to get my sub off of my ceramic tile floor, and it has performed better since I have done this.

I use a piece of astro-turf from an old MLB ballpark.... it works great.... but I agree with the others.... put something under it.

You can get a SubDude or Gramma from Auralex. As mentioned you can also build a riser yourself or just put it on something else. I used my Gramma (which I already had) and put it on something to raise up the sub (inspired by Big Daddy's riser ideas). I've got a hardwood floor as well.

I have a front-firing sub on hardwood, but I use a Gramma also. It does a good job of cutting down bass travelling through the floors and walls. I recommend it.

Thanks everyone. I'll working on getting the sub off the hardwood floors. Thanks for all the good advice. Forsberg21 I'll probablly try to put something together like what you have. Should it be a certain height off the floor?
Thanks,

Default Subwoofer l Decoupling With the Floor l Extremely Important!

Hello

The most significant improvement in bass response, would be to decouple it from the floor with vibration dampen feet; the improvement would be substantially more than any other consideration.

I should make clear here that while carpet will affect the bass frequencies, carpet is entirely inadequate for the purpose of decoupling. Using carpet under the subwoofer or in surrounding areas, could be used to tune the sound of the bass; just think of it as tweaking or tuning, as using tone controls.

Whether on carpet or hardwood floors, decoupling using vibration dampening materials is equally effective and of enormous improvement to low frequency bass performance.

Of course, properly positioned in a room and with proper settings must equally be implemented concurrently.

Which vibration dampening feet? This you will have to research for yourself, as opinions are going to complicate this rather simple consideration.

Thank You

Thanks,
Make sure you're not just raising it off the floor but are actually decoupling it either with acoustic foam (like the Gramma) or dampening feet. I think Big Daddy posted some feet in another sub thread around here somewhere- it might be in the building a riser thread.

Yes, Big Daddy did provide a pic somewhere, and they were the rubber isolators that you see with Buttkickers. I have them and they work great for isolation. I also have dampening material on the bottom of my riser's legs that you cannot see to properly decouple the riser. If you look at the link from the Buttkicker website, you'll see what I mean.

If you are going to build the riser yourself, here is a sticky from Big Daddy on the how to's…..

Start at Post #2…..good luck!

Good day to all! May I ask for opinions on the most desirable distance between the down firing sub and the floor? Thanks
