Usually good surge protectors are the "big" ones made by monster or APC that plug into the wall with the strip but the better ones that cost a few bucks more tend to usually be pretty big. What I would suggest in order to protect your home theater investment is to get a power conditioner...I think APC makes one you can buy 8 plugs for about 100+ and that will keep everything under warranty from the manufacturer incase damage is done to the equipment.

I already have an APC H10. I'm looking for a small but good SP for just my subwoofer which will be plugged into a totally different outlet.

Not sure how good they are, but they make receptacles with built-in surge protectors for under $100. When I get to that point, I may look into them since I am in the same situation as you.

Not that I want to mention the brand, although you can probably find a simular other brand. Monster makes a small two plug SP just for subwoofers, check amazon.

I use this brand for my amp and for a large color laser (one for each) I have used them for quite a while and love them, no problems!

Leviton in-wall electrical outlets double as surge protectors. Highly recommended...cost about $40-$50.

Here you can see the outlet with the indicator light that my sub plugs into. It is completely protected by this and a whole house surge supressor. And no stinky APC bars laying on my floor.
