Yeah. If you have one of the ones made before the 40GB models started coming out in October of 2007, it has SACD. Any of the models after that including the 40GB (like the one I have) lose out on PS2 compatibility and on SACD.

Hey,

It would have a SACD logo on it if it was one of the PS3's that played SACD.

I know the 60 and 20GB units played SACD. Some of the 80GB units also played SACD.

I only have 1 SACD but I love it!!!!! (May buy more ...)

Those launch PS3's did...not sure about the 80gb, so I can't confirm...but I'll take your word for it. I have the launch 60gb which does indeed play SACD.

This is kinda off subject, but my question is:

Does a SACD sound that much better then a regular CD? Or should I be asking, how much better does it sound?

I have a launch PS3, but never put in a SACD.

They certainly can. But, as I have been suggesting for some time, those that can afford an upgrade (modification) of their DVD/CD/Blu-ray player by the Upgrade company, really well recorded CDs played on these modified machines can approach and be very near the audio performance of SACD. So, for those with large CD collections this may be something to consider.

YES......much better! However, the PS3 is not the best vehicle for getting the most out of those discs.

I never got into SACD before as I'm primarily a vinyl afficionado. Recently however, because I am without a TT for the time being, I started to buy a few SACD's and the difference between it and regular CD is like night and day. The severe (IMO) shrillness of standard CD disappears when listening to SACD (even in 2-channel mode). I can only imagine what the improvements are with a dedicated player.

I guess I should get one and test it out. Some of the example's I have heard people tell others to get, just wasn't my style.

The first one that I would suggest is Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. It is a real stunner, and they seem to have gotten this one right. Hopefully the rest of your system will be up to the challenge.

Some others worthy of consideration are:

Dire Straits: Brothers In Arms
Roxy Music: Avalon

I would say that as I just picked them up today!

There are some well recorded CD's out there and there are some poor quality SACD's , but even on its best day, CD's will never sound as good as an SACD. The difference is like watching 480 & 1080P.

Pink Floyd-DSOTM is a good sounding SACD but it could be much, much better. Plus there are a couple different versions of it, and the Japanese version is the better one. The downside is that the cost is two to three times as much as the regular SACD version.

Even if you have a modded/upgraded CDP, SACD still destroys standard CD playback quality. However SACD is supposed too. It would also be a good idea to get into SACD before too long as far as out of print SACD's are concerned. Expect to pay big bucks for titles that are in demand. It is not uncommon to see rare SACD's selling upwards of $50-$100 USED !!!

You should have checked A Guide to SACD in the Blu-ray and High Quality Music section.

Quote:
FAQ About PS3's SACD Capability
Sony’s PlayStation 3 (20GB, 60GB, and the old 80GB models) can play music in SACD format through an HDMI cable. However, they do not output DSD over the cable, but instead convert it to PCM. The 40GB PS3 and the new 80GB PS3 models do not play SACD music.
I will move this thread there.

Yes. Definitely. If the SACD has been mastered properly, it will sound much better than it's Redbook CD counterpart.

I do have a couple early SACDs that don't sound as well as they can, but they still are an improvement over the CD from the same time. I also have a few TelArc SACDs, which were directly recorded in DSD, and they are absolutely stunning with their sonic quality. Truly the best I've heard in SACD or any format.

Were those mostly Classical? I have a great local store that specializes in CD/SACD in Classical, Jazz and World music......Any recommendations?

It depends.

First, and foremost, SACD has hires multichannel tracks while CD is limited to two channels. So, if you like multichannel, then SACD is going to be better than CD. Plus, you will likely find the quality is better than DD 5.1 and DTS tracks on DVD, which are more compressed than the hires output of SACD.

Discussions about whether stereo SACDs are better than CDs get rather heated. Controlled listening tests suggest the differences are not necessarily great. Some SACDs may sound better because of the care taken in the recording and/or production process rather than any inherent differences in the format.

But, regardless of the reasons, you should definitely give SACD a listen. Dark Side of the Moon and Brothers in Arms are both spectacular discs.

I would like to make a comment on that, although I am a novice when it comes to SACD or regular CD for that matter.

Of the 4 SACD's I own, I have 3 of them on regular CD and vinyl. They are:
Pink Floyd: Dark Side Of The Moon
Dire Straits: Brothers In Arms
Roxy Music: Avalon

I have listened to all 3 on 5.0 (I don't have a sub) and also 2-channel. With the Pink Floyd SACD I did a 2-channel comparison and the difference to regular CD is like night and day. I have done 2 listen's each of Brothers in Arms on CD and SACD in 2-channel and again...the difference is like night and day. Later this evening I'll be evaluating the Roxy Music: Avalon disc in the same manner. I suspect that the same result will be realized.

I think that SACD in general, when making a direct comparison, outshines the CD version every time.

If I may make a couple ???

I love how realistic Miles Davis-Kind Of Blue on SACD sounds. Really feels like "they" are in the living room, no speakers, no electronics, pure music !!! To me this one is magnificent, and if you are into mellow yet hip instrumental jazz, then it will be a real treat !!! It really is an experience in my living room, and my go to choice for recommendations. It is also inexpensive for an SACD too.

http://www.amazon.com/Kind-Blue-Mile...4854303&sr=1-4

Next up, BLUE COAST COLLECTION - THE E.S.E. SESSIONS - VARIOUS ARTISTS (HYBRID SACD). Stunning sound quality. Definitely superb test and demo material. Also has quite a few very likable and enjoyable tracks on it so it's not basic crappy elevator music. A lot of people love this one and it's easy to "hear" why.

http://www.amazon.com/Blue-Coast-Col...4852493&sr=8-1

So far I have about 50-60 SACD's and some I took chances on and love, and some that's not the case. Only because it's not something I really would listen to anyhow. These two suggestions are very likable and enjoyable, but most of all the sound quality itself is simply great !!!
