Welcome. If you want games get the PS3, if you want to stream Netflix and save $100, get the Samsung.

Dell is still offering the PS3 for $299 if you call in and order. Search for the deal at places like fatwallet.

It's not a matter of just games, the PS3 can much much more than the Sammy. Find all the features of both, compare and decide if the extra features the PS3 has is worth $100.

If you are asking this question then you are not interested in playing video games. I have both the sammy 1500 and ps3. The ps3 is a great blu ray player but I find myself watching more movies on the sammy only because of the ps3's cooling fan. During quiet passages (at least for me) the fan is quite annoying where as my sammy never makes a sound once I start the movie.

No jet fan on mine, even when I press my ear up to the system to check. I love my PS3, best investment I've ever made.

Mine is noisy. I have a 60 gig I got when they first came out and it was quiet until two months ago. Now it's noisy. It's still no where near as bad as my 360 though.

I'm think you might get a little bit picture quality from the Samsung, although that really does depend on what it's being displayed on.
That said I would highly recommend the PS3. The interface (blu-ray menu transitions) is much faster/smoother than any other blu-ray i've used and i work in an electrical store.
I have a PS3 and i'm not into games at all. I use it for so much more, with help from a free programme call TVersity I can stream all my video files (even MKV HD files) and web video (Hulu, Iplayer etc) from my network drive and pc's to the PS3. This also works for music and photo's too. I also use it to store most of my photo's too. You can even print strait from the PS3 now. Oh yer and it play's games too

I love my PS3. It's done well, but about a month ago it didn't feel like reading any discs. I was a bit concerned since it wasn't but 14 months old, but running a fan test got it back in the mood. The warranty wouldn't apply, so Sony would charge $149 to get it working again. If it craps out for good I would seriously consider the Samsung 1600 because I really like the Netflix feature and because I am just not that into gaming anymore. The main drawback of the Samsung is the additional $80 you have to spend on the WiFi dongle if, like me, you can't connect it via ethernet cable.

Just my two cents:

I don't have a PS3, but I have been around one that was playing a Blu-ray. It sounded like it was about to take off and speed around the room.

I have a Samsung 1400 and love it. It has played everything flawlessly. I have a relative with the Samsung 1500 and he has not complained - and he would if there was a problem. I can only think the 1600 would be just as good.
