Default Help with PS3 and SD DVD UpScale Stretching Image

Hi,

I just bought a PS3 (after returning a Samsung BD-P2550) as a Blu-Ray player and DVD player. I also have a Samsung LNA550 HD 1080p tv. Using an HDMI cable.

I know that the new generation PS3 systems have upconverters for SD DVDs but I am having the following trouble:

Every movie (SD DVD) I put in is being stretched to fit the entire screen of my television. I have tinkered with every setting that I can think of on the PS3 - this even happens when I select NOT to upconvert.

When I pop the DVD in my cheap RCA DVD player (which also upconverts) the image displays properly.

Please tell me that the $40 RCA is not better than the PS3 at displaying regular DVDs.

How can I display the DVD the way it was meant to be shown (with the letterbox bars) through the PS3? Why is it not doing this automatically?

I have tried watching "Band of Brothers", "In Treatment HBO series" and "Saving Private Ryan". Now I know that Ryan should be showing letterbox black bars because it was filmed in Anamorphic Widescreen 1.85:1.

Anyone know what I can do to properly watch SD DVD's on PS3?

Go to ps3 menu and video settings. Now go to DVD wide display and make sure its set to letterbox not pan and scan. make sure upscale is set to normal as well which will upscale all your DVDs to 1080p. let me know if thiis works.

Also make sure your TV's aspect ratio is set correctly under the PS3's display settings.

Anamorphic widescreen 1.85:1 is not meant to show any black bars. This particular aspect ratio fills the whole screen. The 2.35:1 ratio has black bars.

In video settings - DVD widescreen, this should be set to pan and scan. This way you will view the dvd in the ratio it's meant to be in. You need to ensure though that the tv it self is set to 16:9.

In the video settings, make sure the upscale setting is "normal".

If it is set to "full screen" it will cause the stretched image.

thanks for the help -

yes - i have it set to "normal" upscale, widescreen (not pan and scan) and under HDMI settings it supports ALL resolutions up to 1080p

i don't even have the OPTION though to watch movies in widescreen format with the PS3 that i can tell - is there a way to NOT have it stretched to fill the screen?

Television is LN46a550 set to 16:9

I missed the part where you said you had a Samsung HDTV. With Band of Brothers, you shouldn't be seeing any black bars. The show is filmed in 1.78:1 so it will fill your whole TV. Your TV is 1.78:1/16:9. You should be seeing little or no black bars with a movie like Saving Private Ryan. Saving Private Ryan is shot in 1.85:1 so the black bars will be very small. It sounds like the PS3 is working properly and your old RCA DVD player was not set up correctly. You should only be seeing black bars when the film has a 2.35:1 or 2.40:1 apsect ratio.

1.78:1 Apsect Ratio (No black bars on a widescreen TV)

2.35:1 Aspect Ratio (Black bars will show on a widescreen TV)

thank you guys for the help

you were right - it seems as thought the ps3 is doing a pretty good job upscaling compared to stand alones

collingwood -are you sure it should be set to "pan and scan" and not widescreen
what is the difference? set it to this on ps3 or tv?

as a side note and separate issue (i have seen this one posted a good bit) the audio on the PS3 is VERY low compared to other players - once i set the level above normal to level 2 or 3 it's ok - i have heard some express concern though that this causes too much gain issues through a system

anyway - thanks for the help
