You can't use OEM firmware updates anyway on an HP PC - you have to use an HP update since it has customized code in the firmware that allows it to play on their systems. If you manage to flash your drive firmware with an OEM version (assuming it doesn't have a check feature and shuts you down before it even starts - Sony's does) it'll either render it unusable or fry it altogether.

If you're using QuickPlay, make sure it's updated to version 3.7 - anything older has had BD playback issues. You'll have to do it from within the program (click on the gear icon in the upper right corner, then click on update) since most of the HP support sites are still listing version 3.6.

Also, if it uses BD Live, isolate your system from the 'net if it's just loading and not doing anything.

Default HP dv2700CTO new blueray DVD don't play either

I also have a HP laptop with blue ray, and it used to play older blueray dvds but now it plays even fewer from the new ones.

It only shows the Filmmaker Studio Logo (sometimes the trailers too) and then when the movie is supposed to start just stops doing anything.

I updated HP quickplay to 3.7 , tried it with "isolating" from internet in case it is a BD-live as you say. Checked hp support website for new firmware for blue-ray player but there is nothing there.

Help

Unfortunately HP never uploaded a firmware update for the BC-5500A drive, even though that specific fix is listed in their online solution. The main reason I believe is that most BD playback issues have been a result of the changes to BD Profile 1.1, which made it difficult for older versions of QuickPlay to successfully play all BD movies. Since 3.7 was released, it took care of those issues, although some movies have reportedly been impossible to play on some drives and systems - though personally I haven't seen those problems on mine, and I'm using the same software and the same movies in question. In those cases I'd have to bet that the users likely changed either their BIOS or other drivers that caused a problem at some point during playback.

Need more specific information on your system setup and what drive is in your system. If you give me the Product number from your label (look underneath your notebook - you want the Product, not model #, which usually ends in #ABA) I can check the specifics for your system.

Questions:
1. Are you playing to an external monitor or just using your notebook display?
2. In addition to updating QuickPlay, have you updated any other HP drivers, BIOS, utilities, and updated Vista via Windows Update? If you haven't, run your HP Update utility from your Programs menu, and make sure everything that needs to be updated is updated on your system.
3. When you say that it stops playing back, does QuickPlay freeze, does the movie go back to the main menu, etc. Exactly what happens when it stops, and what have you done to try and get it to work?

My system is HP dv2700 Special edition. Product number is : KQ656AV. HP.com says it is dv2700tv CTO.
System specification: T8100 @2.1Ghz, 3GB RAM , 250GB, NVIDIA 8400GS

1. I was playing all problem blue-ray dvds on notebook display first. I have subscription to Netflix so I can choose which dvds to receive in blue-ray format. I had problems with all latest blue-ray releases, while older releases played in all players and both notebook screen and LCDTV.

2. I got the laptop 3months ago. All updates are through Windows update and HP update. The updates on both are up to date. I haven't installed any specific drivers. Just manual install of QuickPlay from inside the program to 3.7 . The only additional software is PowerDVD 8.0 Ultra. 2 months ago I watched older blue-ray releases with no problems on both QuickPlay and PowerDVD, since they were playing without problems on laptop I watched them on my 32" LCDTV through HDMI.

3. I just started having problems with newer releases. Symptoms: Studio logo plays (in HD) , some trailers play (in HD) , and when the root menu is supposed to appear, screen stays black , BDROM stops reading and goes idle, HDD stops loading and goes idle. And nothing happens ... System even locks(I have let it stay for 2-5min in this state in case it is loading something but it is not ...). I have to Ctrl-alt-del to get Task Manager which says "QuickPlay not responding" CPU usage is ~80-90% while QuickPlay is frozen. At the end I have to "End Task" the QuickPlay.

After I read your suggestions for previous posts. I uninstalled PowerDVD 8.0, and reinstalled QuickPlay 3.7 so I have only the hp player. I tried isolating pc from Internet by turning off WIFI. Nothing changed. Latest movie I tried was "Sex and the city: The Movie" Blue-ray.

Default Same problem

My dv9830us is doing the exact same thing. Previously the BD-ROM stopped working on Blu-rays completely and would only play DVDs. I had to get a replacement from HP which was a HUGE hassle because I was in Iraq at the time. Now I'm out of warranty so I don't know what to do.
