Default Are PSP games going to work on the PS3?

So since they are moving away towards UMD games does this mean they will all be offered via doanload on the PSN? Will these all work on the PS3? If so that is awesome news!!

I don't think so.....I'm pretty sure they would have made the games compatible with the Ps3 when they first began offering umd downloads on PSN. Bummer

Sony has stated that they are working on a solution to offer some of the old games as downloads and even let existing owners of UMD games to aquire (likely for free) a digital copy, if that particular UMD game is in fact made available digitally. There really aren't any more details than that.

NO, PSP games downloaded via PSN are not playable on PS3. You can already download a couple of PSP games, Patapon 2 is one of them. If they made them playable on PS3, it would nullify half the reason to own a PSP.

The New Jak and Daxter game will see a PS2 release. So that's another hit against me maybe finally getting a PSP.

So will Uncharted 2, but they are different games. The more available the better. I wouldn't mind enjoying both..

I would love for LBP PSP able to be played on the PS3.

I have noticed in the store though that some games are tagged PS3/PSP are these just old PS1 games maybe?
I will post an example soon to see if I am crazy or not.

Street Fighter Alpha 2 says PS3/PSP (347MB required) and is a PSone game
FF7
Medal of Honor are both the same as well

EDIT: All the PSOne games show the same thing. I think it would be a good idea to allow PSP games to be run on PS3 they would just make more sales. PSP buyers want one thing, portable on the go device, and that won't stop IMHO, even if it cost them a few sales they are opening up to 20 million console users, how many sales would that generate?

They will be available on PSN via PC or PS3, yes, but, no, you won't be able to play them on your PS3 (or PC for that matter), just like it is now.

PS1 games are playable on both, so, yes, that'd be what you're seeing.

Yes they are, actually. The PSP Go! doesn't have a UMD drive and will eventually replace the other PSPs, which can still play the PSP and PS1 games purchased off of PSN anyway. Really, there's no reason for them to keep doing UMD.

Unless you have evidence that contradicts SCEA's statement that they're continuing to release on UMD, no they're not.

Some time in the future they will drop UMD but there's over 50 million (and growing) UMD PSP's out there to sell these strong new games to.

Papaton 2 was download only (at least in North America). They'll probably determine future plans for inhouse titles based on test cases like this.

I'm sure they'd be happy to kill off the re-sale market as well, since they don't get a cut of that, and will be looking for higher margins with downloads.

It's obvious that eventually, yes, UMD's will be cut, that's what I was trying to/meant to say. As with previous SKU releases, the previous model will remain purchasable but only for a set amount of time, most likely about 2 or 3 months. Some games will still be on UMD, but I'm predicting most games will not.

It seems like Sony is planning on keeping the older PSPs around for longer than just a few months. I'd bet 1 or 2 more years, along with UMD. Seriously, you can't expect their existing user base to mostly migrate within 6 months and SONY would be foolish to deny them most games. Not only that, but people aren't going to immediatly be down with aquiring games digitally. Its going to take time and SONY is preparing to wait.

No one would expect them to migrate to the PSOne, the current models are just fine and fully compatible with digital media. So Sony wouldn't be "denying" them anything, they would just have to aquire it online. However that being said, Shin-Ra is correct on Sony's statement that they will continue to fully support UMD (I heard that comment during E3 I believe it was), and the games (big titles especially) will be around on UMD for years I am sure (My guess is at least 5yrs), not everyone has highspeed and they(Sony) want every dime from every consumer possible, plus retailers will want to continue supporting physical media as long as possible, unless they switch to supplying digital downloads via in store wi-fi or something like that (way down the road to become commonplace).

Digital downloads are great IMHO, however I can not resell any of them once I am board with the game, so this is a plus with suppliers, only a bit of a negative with me.

It's a transition step - I'd bet that UMDs won't go away until the PSP2 - which I'm guessing we'll hear about in two years.

(That assumes that the PSP Go confirms what Sony is hoping - that most users will be willing to transfer to digital-only fairly seamlessly. If UMDs sell well and digital-only games tank then we'd probably see UMDs stay, but I doubt that's going to be the case 2 years from now.)
