Talking Are Disney movies just for young children?

This is something that has always confused me, because when ever you go into any store or site that is selling Disney Blu-rays or DVDs, they always list them as 'Childrens', yet Walt Disney himself never set out to make Snow White or Pinocchio for a target audience of children.

The reason I ask is because it seemes to be a topic most people ignore and just accept the market audience and also I myself am getting on for 18 and always watch Disney film, my favourite being Beauty and the Beast (can't wait to see it in Hi-Def), and yet no one in my family watches them with me as my brother and sister always think they're childrens' films and my parents wouldn't have time anyway, so am I really just too old for them now?

So are they really aimed at just children, because I think they're more for families rather than movies that you stick your children in front of the keep them quiet.

What's your opnion and which is your favourite?

i don't see them as just children's movies and enjoy watching the majority of them myself.

there really is nothing quite like sitting down w/my 4 year old daughter and watching a movie together!!!

as far as my favorite.....it's a toss up between aladdin and the lion king.

I don't think you're ever too old for Disney movies. I think the reason stores put Disney movies in the childrens section is because they are suitable for children, not that they are only intended for children. Disney movies have long gotten critical acclaim, and they wouldn't get such acclaim if they weren't intended for all ages. Beauty and the Beast and UP both received Best Picture nominations and were just as loved by adults as children.

My personal favorite is probably the Lion King, although I do love both Toy Story movies.

The Huntchback of Notre Dame was not for children at all.... We walked out with our little girls back when it came out.

I don't think so! Disney movies are geared to all ages. I think it is just general practice in this country to label all animation "childrens".

Clone Trooper, if you are to old for them at 18, they I am well past the date at 37. Love most of the Disney films as does the wife (who is even older, but do not tell her I said that). I have been watching them since I was 4/5. It is only been over the last 10/15 years that not only have I come to enjoy them more, but to understand some of the depth Disney put into his early works. The great thing now is I get to enjoy them with my 3 kids.

And it is because of Disney films, my 5 year old understands what OAR is and loves it when the black bars change from the side (Pinocchio) to top and bottom (Sleeping Beauty).

Exactly.

And besides, where would you file them in the store if you don't stick them in the Children section.

Sure you could create a seperate 'Disney' section, but then what about the films that are similar?

Seems you're starting up all the big controvesies today; Clone Trooper first the "Star Wars" prequels and now this.

Anyway, I used to think along the lines that cartoons are for kids/families and I should grow out of it. It wasn't until a few years ago that I revisited the classics that I saw the qualities of the stories, characters, themes, artwork, etc from an adult's perspective, and saw that they are still entertaining and decent. Now, I own some.

I'm not sure why cartoons (especially Disney ones) are automatically dismissed as kid's stuff. Either it's because most of them are G-rated, or most of them are considered lame compared to R-rated media, or maybe because most folks grew up watching them and then moved on to other things. I do believe that there is some social pressure too; I'm almost afraid that admitting to others that I enjoy Disney movies might make them think I'm crazy or stupid or something.

These days, I no longer discriminate movies, TV shows, etc based on whether or not it's G-rated, made by Disney, made to be family-friendly, or anything. I tend to avoid media aimed at pre-teens, but otherwise it's all good.

My favorite among Disney movies would probably be "Sleeping Beauty" these days. Favorite Pixar movie is "Wall-E." Favorite Miyazaki movie is "Castle in the Sky."

I know but I've never really used a movie forum before, so I like to get my opnions out there to people that's all. (I'll admit I do feel a bit wrong setting up 2 threads in such a sort time frame)

In the 'animation' section? You can put hand drawn, CG and stop motion animation all in there.

If they are just for young kids, I guess we have a lot of young members on this site

Why do people limit Studio Ghibli films to just Miyazaki? We're talking about whole companies here not just single directors. Studio Ghibli isn't limited to just Miyazaki. Although he is a major part of it's success no doubt.

Anyways, that's off topic. My bad for being picky.

The Animation section is usually reserved for Anime type stuff. Including mature themed Anime.

Wouldn't make a lick of sense to put Disney and such in there.

I think they are among the most creative, inspiring and entertaining films that we have. You didn't like "Up"?? I think more adults liked Up than children to tell you the truth. I must admit, though, that they do make me feel young again, but what's wrong with that

I've always thought that there's an age group, something around 16-20, that think they're too cool to go to animated movies because they are "kids movies." It's not to say these people don't actually like the movies, just that they're afraid to be seen at these movies. That's not the case for everyone, I went to Toy Story 2 when I was 16, but I remember having friends that refused to go see a "kids movie." I remember going to the movies when I was 18 and wanting to see Shrek but one friend refused and we instead saw some crappy movie everyone hated. As you get older people get less judgmental about little things like this and you can feel fine going to G-rated movies.

Beauty and the Beast is my girlfriend's favorite too! In fact, I took her to the live theater show for her Christmas gift this year - VERY COOL! If you thought liking Disney movies was tough on social peers, try a Broadway musical of it! lol

I'd say my favorite would have to be Aladdin, the Lion King, or Mulan. As for the being too old part, a good movie is a good movie. Watch what you like.

I think it is more or less a marketing tool that they use. They can say, Hey look I'm something that children can watch and not be offended. They can and SHOULD be movies that can be enjoyed by all generations. I have friends that chastised me for buying all the Disney movies that have come out so far, but I have no shame in doing so. I love these movies....PS Beauty and the Beast FTW!

IMO only ignorant closed minded people will label "cartoons" or "animated" movies for children. I have just about every Disney movie on blu.

I do agree some are more "childish" then others. But I enjoy them for the most part regardless.
