Let's make sure we are on the same page, you say you have a 6.1 set-up, but you are referring to your rear(s), so do you have 2 surrounds and 1 rear channel for a 6.1 set-up or actually 2 surrounds and 2 rear channels, which would be 7.1?

You have a front stage consisting of a pair of mains and a center, and you have a pair of surrounds, and one surround back speaker. All surround speakers are recommended to be at least 2 feet above ear level while seated. For surround back speakers in 6.1 and 7.1 setups, it's recommended that they be at least 3 feet behind the seating position. The surround back speaker should be centered behind the seating position/s. The surrounds would ideally be on the walls to either side of the seating positions. I recommend you read through the setup guides on the Dolby and THX websites for better information. You'll want to read through the setups for 7.1 systems, but instead of 2 spaced apart surround back speakers, you'll just have one centered behind the seating position.
