Happy Birthday Blu-ray!

Three years ago today, the first Blu-ray titles were released into the wild, marking the beginning of the Blu-ray revolution. While the format was slow out of the gate, it quickly picked up momentum as consumers realized the benefits of high definition over standard DVD. Those of you who proudly display a copy of 'Terminator', 'Underworld Evolution', or 'Hitch' in your collection can claim ownership of a piece of Blu-ray history. While the format has come a long way, there is still a long way to go.

As Sony has recently shown us, with their MovieIQ real-time film database, the advantages of BD-Java and BD-Live, and how they allow the Blu-ray format to continuously evolve to consumer demands. This not only allows Blu-ray to be viable high definition delivery system now, but also allows it to remain a relevant format well into the future.

So call a bunch of friends and family over to your house, put in your favorite Blu-ray title, and join us as we wish Blu-ray a very Happy Birthday!

Sounds good to me, except for the fact that while I own all 3 of those movies, none are RQ.

Not every film has to have merit as tech demo material for audio or visuals. I've heard some terrible things about Terminator, but I would say that Hitch and Underworld Evolution look just as intended, the best they can be.

I think the technical specs limit that to a degree. I love the aspect of adaptability to it, but after a point, the capacity available on disc will become a problem. Yes, they can do 1080p and uncompressed sound excellently, but how well does it handle 3-D with two unique picture outputs? Pretty well, you say? Ok, well how well would the disc capacity handle 4K picture? How about 4K picture in stereo 3-D?

It's doing great now and will continue to do so in the foreseeable future, but it's great adaptability won't stop it from being held back by technical limitations in the future; it's soft-adaptability alone doesn't allow it to be the be-all, end-all format. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a higher capacity system come at some point far down the line, when 3DTV is as common as HDTV is now, when "quadHD" is as common as 1080p is now. Hell, we might even all be on 2.4:1 screens by then.

Yes! Happy Birthday indeed!

Other BDs were released on June 20, 2006 - House of Flying Daggers is one that I know of(came included with this VAIO laptop).
No, it is not RQ.
It is a BD though...

Hard to believe it's been 2 and a half since getting the PS3... seems longer. Was during a weird time in my life that seems forever ago. Glad the format has done well and more movies continue to get released (though not the ones I want quite yet), but I really don't feel like it's been growing much lately.

None of my friends or family have bought a player yet, nor anyone at work, or come to think of it - anyone I know or have come in contact with. I remember it being a big deal when people I know got their first DVD player. The Blu to DVD ratios are holding steady... is anybody else worried that things are stalling???

Happy birthday Blu, I wish you many, many more.

I dont think things are stalling for Blu ray but getting better. With the lowering of prices for Blu ray players things are getting better and better. Blu ray is the way of the future for watching movies. The craze is catching on and the ball is rolling. Happy Birthday to Blu and I to wish it many many more.

I must say that Blu adoption in my area has growin huge. I am always seeing people pick up the Blu rather then the DVD. I rarly see anyone pick up DVD. Any everyday I'm out looking I see new people picking up the format. it's great in my area, of heck ville.
