Default Difference between DVD and Blu Ray Movice

I would like to know if I copy a dvd movie or blue ray movie to my computers hard drive, when I go to play the movies will I see a difference? I have a 4 terrabyte server which I want to store movies and play back on my HDTV. Which format is better to store my movies in?

Sorry if this is in the wrong forum
George

First I would like to say that the discussion of ripping movies is not allowed here, though I do it myself as I like how easy it is to access all my titles without having ot search for the physical disc.

You will definitely notice a difference, you are not losing video or audio quality. Of course blu-rays will take much more space but hard drives are so cheap right now that you you don;t have to worry about saving space.

You will have to judge by watching the blu-ray and dvd version of each movie and decide if blu-ray has much better quality to justify ripping it to you hard drive over the dvd. In most cases chosing blu-ray is more than justified. But if you already own the dvd and don't want to buy the same movie on blu-ray, you may want to stick to you dvd.

How do you like the
Television: Samsung 46" LCD LN46A550?
I swear by them i have 27inch which i am going to upgrade in next month. Back to my question about the DVD and Blu-Ray. Won't they be the same if they are ripped to my hard drive. Space is not going to be the issue. I know that they are encoded differently, but i thought the quality depended on the space availible to reord to ie, HDD or Disc. If the 2 are different encoding wise I am going to Blu Ray, I have alot of movies to convert from DVD, VHS, to Blue Ray. Your thoughts?

They were compress to fit on the dvd, so even if you copy them in your computer with all the space you want the resolution want come back... you would need the original film to do that. So blu-ray is the way to go.

I love my HDTV, it works great and I have no problems with it.

As far as converting DVD and VHS to Blu-ray, it can't be done. Once video and audio are compressed to fit a certain size they cannot be uncompressed to their original size. It seems like you think they are compressed like ZIP and RAR files, which can be compressed to save space and later uncompressed without data loss.

With video and audio this is not the case. When they are authored to DVD they are encoded at a lower quality to save space, such that data is actually lost or stripped from the original video and audio in order to fit it on a DVD.

You may be able to re-encode some DVD video to remove some pixelation and macroblocking but the video will still be very soft and colors will be dull compared to the blu-ray quality.

So ultimately if you want the best quality movie you should stick with blu-ray. I understand that you may have many DVD movies and you don't want to re-buy them in blu-ray...that is a waste of money. You will have to pick and choose which movies you want to upgrade. For instance, you will probably want to upgrade some of your favorite movies, actions movies, animated, or CGI intensive movies. But for movies that the best video and audio quality are not necessary, like comedies or movies you don't care much about, then a re-encoded version of the DVD should suffice.
