There are rumors running rampant that BDA is having trouble getting a production system finalized for the 50 GB dual layer version.
Statements are being made that HD DVD has completed their systems through the dual layer, 30 GB, version while BDA is having trouble getting to 50 GB outside the lab. I've read implications in a few places recently that BDA may not get beyond whatever hiddent "gotcha" has cropped up, and that BD may forever be stuck at 25 GB. Is there any evidence (other than rumor or "hear-say") that refutes these statements? |

They have been selling 50GB discs in Japan in caddies for quite some time.
It may be that they have issues with discs without caddies for some reason... In any case, there is plenty of time before launch for them to get their act together IMHO. Cheers! |

I wouldn't put too much faith in what a camp (HD-DVD) say about their competitor (Blu-ray)...
And what are Intel going to do for HD-DVD? "The new Itanium processor, now with HD-DVD support!" And Microsoft is supporting HD-DVD by NOT having HD-DVD in Xbox360... |

Yeah, they rumors were statements from Doherty, Microsoft's media convergence guy. What did you expect from an MS employee?

The opinions stated in this forum are all well and good, but what's reality?
Is there a production set up for 50 GB disks or is there a problem? |

aaaight =P
I wouldn't consider it as a problem anyway, they'll find a solution anyway if a problem occurs, to much money depends on it =P :wink: |

DVDs are different...
But, consider this: They develop the AVC to wedge movies down onto the single layer HD DVD and then ***** that there are no 50GB BD-ROMdiscs around. Since Bluray has also allowed the AVC codec, it would seem that 25 GB is plenty for any BD-ROM title. I think that with the target release date in mind it doesn't really matter if they cannot make BDROMs at 50GB right now, even indulging this unsupported statement. The only people likely to be affected are game developers for PS3. These smear campaigns are paper thin when you start asking deeper questions... |

Very nice news indeed...
But this is going off-topic. As far I know, the BDA doesn't have any trouble with the 50 GB discs. The reference to DVD in this thread is, that they used BD DL recordable technology as a base for the DVD DL recordables. ![]() |
