Default PS3 Resolution on plasma (more tv than ps3)

Hi, i have a new 720p Panasonic plasma, but when the PS3 scans the HDMI signal it says the tv can accept up to 1080p signal. I'm not seeing any bad side effects like the tv downconverting the 1080p to 720p, does anyone else have this issue and leave it on 1080p or manually set it to 720p/1080i? thanks

Alot of 720p tvs will accept 1080i input. some even will accept 1080p input.
But the Tv will end up displaying it in the 720p native format. So there is some downconversion involved on the TV.

Your Panasonic will accept at 1080/24p signal, so just use that or set your HDMI setting in the PS3 to "auto". Even though the Panny's resolution is 768p, the image processor is 1080p. I use 1080/24p on mine and the image is incredible. Avoid using 720p since the image tends to be a bit softer compared to the other resolutions.

Thanks, i thought it looked a little sharper on 1080p, but i didnt know if that was my mind playing tricks on me trying to get away with something since 1080p sounds better...

If it looks better, use it. However, keep in mind that if you do any gaming on the PS3, most of them are rendered in 720p. That means the PS3 will upconvert it to 1080p, then your set will convert it back down- unneccessary steps that could affect the quality of the graphics. If it were me I'd just set it to 720p.

You're incorrect here. The Panny plasmas have a 1080p image processor, meaning that everything displayed, from 480i to 1080p is scaled to 1080p, then displayed at the panels 768p resolution. The Panny's actually have better scalers than most DVD players, aside from perhaps the Oppo's, so setting DVD players to 480i through HDMI or component usually yields a better picture. Setting the BD player, or PS3 in this case, to "auto" is the best choice. It will display the image in the intended resolution.
