Default Problems with Avatar and Oppo BD 83

I went to watch Avatar on my Oppo BD 83 it loaded up the Fox Blu ray title but it does not load up the menu screen.

I tried my PS3 it worked fine has there been a recent firmware update.

The exact same thing happened when I rented Ponyo it would load up the Disney logo and not the menu.

Pleas PM me was well as posting thanks.

Maybe you have a bad disk? I have the same machine and it loaded and played without a hitch. Are your firmware updates current?

plz update when you get this resolved...I am about to pull the trigger on the Oppo (deciding between the 83 or 83SE), but might wait a bit...I would obviously want to be able to play Avatar on my new player

I've had my 83 for a little more than a year and not a single problem with ANY type of disc. There hasn't been a peep out of anyone over on the BDP-83 thread over at AVS about problems with playing Avatar. hope that helps lower your heart rate.

Sounds like you don't have the latest firmware as I have had no problems whatsoever playing Avatar or Ponyo.

Update your BDP-83 firmware to the latest revision and it should fix your problem. I had the same issue with Avatar until I updated.

It's strange because some owners are reporting no problems whatsoever (some who haven't upgraded their firmware at all) and some with BD-Live on or off the movie will play or not play. There doesn't seem any sort of predictable pattern to this. Can't say for myself since I don't have Avatar and don't intend to use my own money for it since I don't hold it in any kind of esteem. (will hold out for a christmas present).

I just bought one last Wednesday and I have watched Avatar 3 times without a single issue. The first thing I did after hooking it up was to download the latest firmware update.

Why did it take 6 posts to tell the guy to update his freaking firmware? Is this 2008 of something?

I hope the updated firmware solves your problem. You know I own 2 panasonic blu ray players (bd35 and bd80) and neither have ever had their firmware updated yet I have never had a single problem out of either of them, including Avatar. Maybe I'm lucky. But its just another reason I continue to buy Panasonic products.

Looks like the first reply asked him if his firmware was up to date

i think part of the problem i have found on this site is that to many people expect everyone else to be responsible for them. truely, some things need to be found out on your own. reading the manual tells you about updating your firmware, a bizzilion post of folks telling other folks to update their firmware, even googling the problem would have mentioned update your firmware. at some point people need to do some "homework" on their own. too many times people throw questions out there and the answers are right there in the manual. the other thing is that we have to pull the questions/answers out of them instead of them saying something like, "i am having this problem with this model unit, i updated the firmware, checked all connections, changed the cables, changed the inputs check the receiver, interconnects, speaker cables it still does this, oh yeah this just started...." instead we spend lots of post asking did you this, try this, what model is it....that's a lot of time when more times than not, the answer could have been found with some simple reading.

don't get me wrong either, we all reach a limit and then we need some help, ok, that's when you come a post something. and here's the kicker, he asked "has there been a recent firmware update?" why not just go to the oppo site and see if there has been one and what is the date on it? he knew to ask but didn't check himself, again, do your homework first before asking for help. if (and we don't know if it is or not) the oppo was connected to the internet and the system was setup it would have told him there was an update right away as soon as a new one is available.

i'm not getting on his case (mind you canada is a friend of mine online at this forum) but in general too many people do just that, don't do a little searching themselves. i answered this purely to the "why did it take 6 post to tell him to update his firmware" you can't get on everyone else because he didn't think to update the firmware (not a secret either) on his machine first.

the other great thing about this whole thread is that it's been 18 post and the op hasn't posted since the very first one to state that his problem has been resolved or anything so do we keep on posting or what?

I like helping people too but i think folks have to do a certain amount in before asking for help and i don't think that many do anymore because they have so many people willing to do the thinking and answer searching for them.

sorry if this ticks anyone off but most of you know it's the truth. i do lots & lots of searching before i ever ask for help, that' how i truly learn, not just taking the easy way out and letting the world solve my problems for me, Canada, buddy please know that i'm not singling you out so please do not feel that way. i'm sorry it was you but i'm responding to a question to all of us about why it took so long to give an answer. i hope our online friendship is not in trouble because of this. sorry people but that question did kinda set me off....

For those consumers that have a modified mult-region or selectable OPPO BDP-83 players

OPPO Digital designed the OPPO BDP-83 to play Region A Blu-rays and region 1 DVD's. With the latest official OPPO firmware installed there should be no playback problems with 99% of all region A discs. Now when people install a third party region selectable or region free hardware modification to the player it is better quality then the old third party region firmware software. The official OPPO Digital player software was never made to play region B or C BLU-RAY's and it is possible that some region B and C BLU-RAY's will not play even with the third party region hardware device installed. OPPO Digital is not responsible for BLU-RAY Region B and C titles or DVD region 2-6 titles having playback problems. OPPO Digital designs their firmware for only Region A and region 1 support (and titles that are encoded with region all).

** Any playback problems with Blu-ray Region B or C titles or region 2-6 DVD titles that are reported to OPPO Digital might not be fixed in a firmware update since OPPO Digital only officially supports Region A and region 1 titles (and region all titles). **
