Default Got My Oppo 80

I had finally decided to replace the dying Samsung 1500 and found a Panasonic dmp-bd80 demo at Best Buy for $211. They had to hunt the remote. When I tried for an hour to set it up and discovered the remote was for a Panasonic DVD recorder, I returned it when Best Buy said they could get me the right remote for $36!!

I ordered the Oppo 80 due to reading the comments on this and other forums. Got it in just a few days.

It was packaged in a really nice box and a fabric bag - really nice touch. The manual was written very well and setup was a breeze through HDMI to the display and 6 RCA cables to the 5.1 analog ins of the AVR. The setup is a piece of cake - just awesome!

My wife and I watched Twister and Quantum of Solace right away. The older Samsung was skipping and locking in Q of S. Both movies played flawlessly and I noticed immediately the difference (and improvement) in both the audio immersion and color depth and fidelity in both movies. I'm no audiophile but I might have to turn down the color settings of the display. The video appeared much more detailed, sharp, contrasty, vivid and deep than with the Samsung. The detail almost leaps off the screen!

I may have to go out and hunt down some of those new HD audio cds. What are they called - sacd?

Any suggestions? We like jazz - Winston, Kenny G, Pat Matheny.

I'm just really happy with this $289 very high quality machine.

Kenneth

I'm also considering the Oppo 80. Did you try watching a standard definition DVD? If so, how are the upscaling abilities of the player? As I understand it, the 80 doesn't have the same chip for upscaling that the 83 has.

Thumbs up Congrats

I just received mine yesterday, I'm extremely happy with it also......That's what I've come to expect from this great company. As an owner of their DV-983 & BDP-83, I know we made a wise choice. Enjoy your new toy I know I will........... J.J. the upscaling of standard def is very good (I've compared it directly to my DV-983) Although the screen is rather small (42 inches). I didn't see much difference.

Kenneth,
I share your taste in music. I will make two suggestions for SACD playing:

Dark Side of the Moon -- Pink Floyd
Come Away With Me -- Norah Jones

I'm considering an Oppo also but I have many questions between me and the purchase. I'll have to hunt around in this forum to find the right place to ask them.
