Default Sony: PSP without UMD 'always the plan'

http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/02/so...ways-the-plan/

Quote:
During an interview with GameBusiness.jp, Sony's product planning division head honcho, Naoya Matsui, commented that Sony always had plans to go UMD-less, and that the PSP Go is the fruition of all that planning. "We'd planned to release a PSP model without a UMD drive since the very beginning," Matsui said. He further makes his case by stating, "But if we'd simply released the hardware, there wouldn't have been much for everyone to enjoy. We needed to prepare the right environment for it first - things like the transferral of content with the PS3 and PSN, and PC software to manage content like music and movies such as Media Go."

Matsui explains that part of the progression of the PSP to the PSP Go is that Sony had to wait until digital content was on par with physical media, and that the timing now is right. That's one of the reasons why Sony is still selling the existing PSP alongside the Go. Well, that, and it's probably not a good idea to have one single handheld available for purchase that costs as much as a Wii.

Knowing that, I would rather that Sony released the PSP with digital media ONLY from the get-go (but I understand why they didn't/couldn't). But if that were the case, then this forum would would be a dried-up shell of itself right now.

With all the improvements to PSN and the PS Store since the PS3 came out, I completely understand why they would put off a download only version until now when a strong infrastructure is in place.

Thumbs up

Hoping they put more effort into it because I only use my PSP to watch movies. Would love it if someday I could easily store 30-40 movies to watch whenever I want.

Movies and other videos yes, with the Media Manager software that you can download for free (can't recall the name exactly, it's my curse). And since that software has an interface into the PSN Store, I would assume the same for games is possible.
