Default Speculation: What would a umd-less psp mean for gamers? And how will Sony pull it off?

i think most assume no umd in the next psp means digital downloads. but the rumor is no umd..not no optical. will sony just make a mini-blu or something? memory stick games?

what about bc with psp 1k-3k?

any thoughts guys? i'm seeing more and more arguing over how it can be handled.

personally, i just dont see how all digital would work. i would think brick and mortar retailers would have a problem with it.

and an optical drive hurts battery life. so..memory stick the way to go?

btw mods..i started a new thread so it'll get noticed, things get lost in the psp2 rumor thread..but move if needed

By making all current games downloadable!

No I think b/c could be done by trading in UMDs for flash carts at stores or by sending them into Sony.

I could see memory sticks, but they would have to have a good amount of on board storage since that would eliminate game saves on a memory stick. Brick and mortor could still sell packaged games that way, and people still have a physical copy

I can't see them using UMD's very much longer. I know we all like physical based media hence the fun in trading in and or trading another person for the game but think about it UMD has a very limited potential in terms of space and how quickly a game can be read. If games were digitally downloaded for the new psp then it would possibly mean bigger games with better graphics but no potential for getting any money back for those games when you are done playing them. The battery life would be much improved but there are pro's/con's to whichever way they choose to go for the new system. The only major letdown would be everyone who owns UMD's right now would not have the oppurtunity to play those games on their "new" psp which I can see is a problem given that there are many great games out for PSP right now. I guess we will have to just wait and see but I can totally see them going non UMD.

i wonder if an add-on is out of the question. that way for those who want a physical copy, they can buy the umd add-on for the new psp.

sony has said we're 4-5 years away from all digital, so i dont think the umd is going anywhere..it just wont be on the new psp

The questio I have is this, if all games are going to be strickly downloadable only......who is going to sale the hardware in the future?

Retailers right now only sale the hardware right now because they make money off the software side. Stores will sale the hardware at cost most of the time to make the real money selling software. If you remove the software from retail stores, why would they sale the hardware? Will I have to buy the PSP2 or PS4 from Sony online because Wal-mart no longer has any need to sale the hardware?

They'd still be selling the software, it just would be on a memory stick with a case w/ instructions. You'll still have the option to download it off the PSN Store too.

At least thats what I'm getting from it.

Possibly like a game cartridge, like what the DS has?

BTW xtop, love the Hugh Laurie but miss the Bender.

Sell an empty UMD case with an instruction manual and a download voucher printed inside. Blamo, problem solved. The convenience of being able to change games without changing disks is too great a deal to pass up!

If PSP4K is all that's cracked up to be and rumored and if Sony has a trade in deal where I can just mail them my games and they'll give me a voucher to download each and every game I have, I'll trade in my PSP3000 and get the 4K day 1.
