Angry UPS crushed my 805!

Alright well my nightmare came true. The service center that I shipped my Onkyo 805 to just called and said it showed up crushed. The rear corner and near the front I guess. Looks like I'm going to have to file a claim. This stinks. I've been without it for a couple weeks now and looks like it's going to be a lot longer now.

What is the best way to file a claim? Any tips? It was packed well in my opinion. It was packed like a computer tower because I just so happened to have packet it in a computer tower box with the styrofoam that the computer came in. Since the receiver is crushed in a few spots it sounds like they either dropped it or dropped something on it. I mean come on, it's steel! There should be no reason that it showed up crushed!!!

ouch....that sucks! And since its an 805, where are you gunna get another one... Yeah their around but they will try to replace it with a "check" for its value.... or maybe even an 806 which is a step down.... Call UPS and let them know what it retailed for & aim ^HIGH^. Best of luck & keep us updated on what happens???

That sucks. It should have been packed in its original box though. A computer tower box is not enough packing. Ups packages have to withstand a 6 foot drop and 75 lbs to drop on them. The 75 lbs is the heaviest package they take that goes on the belts and they drop 6 feet. All packages are automatically insured for $1000.00. You might have trouble getting your claim handled since it was not packed correctly.
I deal with ups alot and ship many items on a daily basis with them. Good luck.

Sorry to hear about it. Unfortunately all of the carriers are and have been responsible for damage to a lot of audio equipment.

Just because it's not in the original packaging does not mean it wasn't packed properly. It was bought as an open box item from Circuit City and did not come with original box. Besides, how many receivers do think will actually take a 6ft drop and not be broken? The receiver is almost 60lbs. And working for UPS I can assure you that we did not have drops at all in our belt system, just slides. Some packages are also 150lbs or so. I worked for UPS as a package handler for over 2 years and quit for a better paying job. I know how things are transported.

The receiver was insured for $750. I figured if anything were to happen then I would be able to get something close to an 805.

Man I'm really sorry to hear that about your receiver. I can relate a similar experience if it helps any. I ordered a pair of Klipsch RF-82s (tower speakers) from a guy on Audiogon with good feedback. They were "slightly used." He documented a couple of very minor blemishes on them and then shipped them to me trough UPS using their "Pack and Ship Promise." So the UPS store he dropped them off at packaged them and shipped them out. When I got them, they both had taken a significant amount of cosmetic damage. Corners were smashed, etc. They still functioned but looked terrible. I took pics, contacted the seller and he initiated the claim process (he had to do it cuz he's the one who shipped them). I had to pack them back up like they were and UPS came and picked them up. They said they had to inspect them to determine if they were packaged properly before they would pay out a claim. It ended up taking over 2 weeks IIRC, but in the end everything worked out and the claim paid out and I got my money back. So the item doesn't have to be in the original packaging for a claim to pay out, but when you initiate the claim on your end, I suspect the procedure will be exactly the same. The receiver will have to package it back up and UPS will pick it up for inspection. When I posted my issue, and asked for help, several other people responded who had been through similar experiences and the results were pretty good across the board. It seems UPS is good about paying out claims when they're at fault. I wish you the best of luck with it. What's a bummer in your case is that they don't make the 805 any more, but there are still other great receivers out the to pick from.

UPS sucks - I ordered a new Pioneer receiver last week from Amazon, UPS destroyed it. It was so bad I actually cut my finger on a piece of metal hanging off the unit. It looked like one of their trucks had run over it. Fortunately Amazon sent me a new one overnight. Sorry!

To the OP, I am sorry to hear that. I LOVE my 805 and I would be so hurt thinking I'm not going to get mine or an replacement 805 back.

That sucks, I'm depressed with you!!!!

I feel for you man..

That 805 rocks. Maybe Onkyo could maybe help you out in the end as well...You never know...but I doubt it. It's Onkyo after all.

That sucks, I just had the same thing happen to me too, I ordered an Energy speaker to replace my last Sony, and it showed up with the grill plugs busted, so now I too have to file a claim...

My source of many items and a lot of work, Dave Schulte, has a client that caught a FEDEX delivery man throwing a piece of electronic equipment over a 6 foot fence on camera. The piece of equipment was insured, expensive and I think totaled. They have all of the documentation with this recording that is needed to collect for damages from FEDEX.
