Um ok this might be a simple answer but I'm simply confused by this. Almost every sub that I have ever seen, minus HTIB. people say to use the sub preout to hook it up. Homever subs also have connections fro speaker wire, and for plug in wires. If its advsiable to use the preouts all the time then why are the other hookups there or are they for something else that I'm not aware of.

Subwoofers have many different types of inputs in order to make them more flexible so that people with two channel systems or older receivers can use them.
LFE output or sub output on a receiver is a relatively new development. They started appearing on the market after the development of Dolby Digital. Older receivers did not have them. Similarly, older subwoofers did not have built-in amplifiers or RCA inputs. Many of them simply had speaker level inputs only. You are probably too young to remember any of this. I have three subwoofers with no RCA inputs and two older pre-amps with no subwoofer output. |

Run a subwoofer cable (preferably RG6) from the LFE or Sub output on the receiver to the subwoofer's LFE (Sub) input. If the the subwoofer has dual RCA inputs, you can use the left channel. However, if you use a Y adapter and connect the subwoofer cable to both inputs, you may gain an additional 3 to 6 db without using any additional power.
